{"id":36951,"date":"2022-10-05T13:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-05T13:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/?p=112524"},"modified":"2022-10-05T13:47:08","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T13:47:08","slug":"discovery-of-hot-neptune-sized-world-could-help-solve-planetary-puzzle","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/discovery-of-hot-neptune-sized-world-could-help-solve-planetary-puzzle\/","title":{"rendered":"Discovery of hot Neptune-sized world could help solve planetary puzzle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ezzy Pearson\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 05 October 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The discovery of a Neptune- sized planet around a hot, bright star could help astronomers understand the mysterious lack of Neptune-sized worlds in tight orbits, a phenomenon known as the Hot Neptune Desert.<\/p>\n<p>Now, astronomers at the University of California, Berkley, say they\u2019ve found a rare Neptune-sized planet orbiting a giant A-type star.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\/&quot;\">exoplanet<\/a>, known as HD 56414 b, is 873 lightyears away in the constellation of Volans.<\/p>\n<p>More discoveries like this could help astronomers better understand why there are few known <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-the-planets-neptune\/&quot;\">Neptune<\/a>-sized planets orbiting close to their host star.<\/p>\n<p>Though current detection methods mean most exoplanets we know of are close to their stars and larger than <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/jupiter\/&quot;\">Jupiter<\/a>, including so-called <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/hot-jupiter-found-in-three-star-system\/&quot;\">hot Jupiters<\/a>, it\u2019s thought that if a small world gets too close to a star, the radiation will strip its atmosphere away.<\/p>\n<p>To test this, Courtney Dressing from the University of California, Berkeley looked for Neptune-sized worlds around A-type stars, which are much brighter in ultraviolet than other types of star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re able to look at planets receiving different amounts of light from their star, especially different wavelengths of light, then we can try to see how exactly a planet keeps its atmosphere over time,\u201d says Dressing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.berkeley.edu&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><strong>www.berkeley.edu<\/strong><\/a><\/p><\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ezzy Pearson Published: Wednesday, 05 October 2022 at 12:00 am The discovery of a Neptune- sized planet around a hot, bright star could help astronomers understand the mysterious lack of Neptune-sized worlds in tight orbits, a phenomenon known as the Hot Neptune Desert.
