Twenty-seven astronauts, via the Apollo program\u2019s mighty Saturn V<\/a> rockets, left Earth for the Moon\u2014a quarter-million miles away.<\/p>\n

Except for those few who serviced the Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, and some SpaceX tourist missions, the remaining five hundred astronauts who have orbited Earth did not ascend much higher than about 250 miles above sea level.<\/p>\n

A distance slightly farther than from Paris to London.<\/p>\n

Or from Islamabad to Kabul.<\/p>\n

Or from Kyoto to Tokyo. Or from Cairo to Jerusalem. Or from Seoul to Pyongyang.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a geographically challenged American, then it\u2019s slightly farther than from New York City to Washington, DC.<\/p>\n
