The winner of the 2022 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition\u2019s \u2018Best Newcomer \u2018category has been disqualified, the Royal Observatory Greenwich has announced.<\/p>\n

The winning images of this year\u2019s astrophotography<\/a> competition were revealed during a ceremony on 15 September 2022, but after a subsequent investigation, organisers have decided to strip the former category winner of their \u2018Best Newcomer\u2019 prize.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been determined that the initial winner of Astronomy Photographer of the Year 14\u2019s \u2018Sir Patrick Moore Prize for Best Newcomer\u2019 did not meet the eligibility criteria and has been disqualified,\u201d a statement from the Royal Observatory Greenwich said.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The prize] is awarded to entrants who have taken up astrophotography no earlier than a year before the competition opened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Astronomy Photographer of the Year 14 judges took another look at this year\u2019s entries and decided to award the prize anew to Hannah Rochford for her photograph \u2018The Heart of the Heart \u2013 Melotte 15\u2019.<\/p>\n

Melotte 15 is an open star cluster<\/a> within the Heart Nebula<\/a>, located in the constellation Cassiopeia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hannah Rochford began deep-sky imaging in November 2021, and it took 5 nights of data collection throughout January 2022 to produce the image.<\/p>\n

Judge and astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich, Ed Bloomer says: \u2018This is a wonderfully balanced image: lots of softness without being fuzzy, and lots of colour without being harsh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is incredible to capture the fine details (for anyone, let alone a newcomer!), and is framed well to draw the viewer in. It\u2019s a real achievement. Absolutely beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The photograph is currently on display in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year<\/a> exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.<\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
