Cetus the Whale is a sprawling autumn constellation<\/a> south of Pisces.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here it nudges into the band of sky described as the Zodiac and consequently the Moon and planets can find themselves inside Cetus from time to time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The outline resembles a whale with a head to the east and raised tail northwest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The stars tell a different story though, the Whale\u2019s tail being represented by a misshapen pentagon that contains Menkar (Alpha (<\/span>\u03b1<\/span>) Ceti), the name meaning \u2018nostril\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

So the apparent tail is actually the head!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The base of the pentagon is Kaffaljidhma (Gamma (<\/span>\u03b3<\/span>) Ceti) a shortened version of \u2018Al Kaff al Jidhmah\u2019, derived from the Arabic meaning \u2018the cut-short hand\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

This name originally referred to a group of five stars in Cetus; Gamma, Xi1<\/sup> (<\/span>\u03be<\/span>1<\/sup>)<\/span>, Xi2<\/sup> (<\/span>\u03be<\/span>2<\/sup>), Delta (<\/span>\u03b4<\/span>) and Mu (<\/span>\u03bc<\/span>) Ceti.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chinese Ti\u0101n Q\u016bn refers to the asterism<\/a> formed from Alpha, Kappa (<\/span>\u03ba<\/span>), Lambda (<\/span>\u03bb<\/span>), Mu, Xi1<\/sup>, Xi2<\/sup>, Nu (<\/span>\u03bd<\/span>), Delta, 75, 70, 63 and 66 Ceti.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ti\u0101n Q\u016bn translates to \u2018circular celestial granary\u2019, with Gamma Ceti known as \u2018the eighth star of circular celestial granary\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kaffaljidhma is a triple system. Through the eyepiece Kaffaljidhma A and B are easily resolved as a double, A being a mag. +3.6 A3 type star, B a mag. +6.3 cooler F3 type.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through a telescope this white-yellow pair are separated by 2.8 arcseconds and often look blue-yellow due to colour contrast.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mag. +10.1 Kaffaljidhma C is an orange star of type K5 and sits 0.25\u02da from A and B.<\/span><\/p>\n

While A and B have a 320-year orbital period, C takes around 1.5 million years to orbit the other two.<\/span><\/p>\n

The system is 82 lightyears away, Kaffaljidhma A being around twice as massive as the Sun.<\/span><\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
