Jupiter reached opposition<\/a> on 26 September 2022, and even after opposition<\/a> the gas giant planet will be a great target to observe throughout November.<\/p>\n

Even with a small or medium refractor telescope you\u2019ll be able to make out Jupiter\u2019s distinct bands and see its 4 largest moons \u2013 known as the Galilean moons<\/a> \u2013 in orbit around the planet.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re lucky enough to own a larger telescope, however, you\u2019ll be able to see a wealth of atmospheric detail on Jupiter.<\/p>\n

But owners of smaller scopes will still be able to enjoy some amazing interactions between Jupiter and its 4 largest moons: Io<\/a>, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.<\/p>\n

On 2 November<\/strong>, Europa and Ganymede can both be seen passing by Jupiter, from our perspective on Earth.<\/p>\n

Io will very close to the planet\u2019s western limb at this time, and will appear to pass behind Jupiter in an event known as an occultation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Europa and Ganymede then appear to race across Jupiter\u2019s disc.<\/p>\n

Ganymede\u2019s shadow makes an appearance on 3 November<\/strong>, forming a double shadow transit with Europa\u2019s shadow.<\/p>\n

On 6 November <\/strong>Ganymede emerges from Jupiter\u2019s shadow 1.1 arcminutes east of the planet.<\/p>\n

Europa and Ganymede are in transit again on the morning of 10 November<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Late on 18 November<\/strong> and in the early hours of 19 November<\/strong>, Callisto will appear to almost touch Jupiter\u2019s northern limb.<\/p>\n

And on the evening of 27 November<\/strong>, Ganymede will be occulted by Jupiter.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s set to be a wonderful month of observing Jupiter and its moons. And even if you don\u2019t manage to get out and see these Galilean moon events, it\u2019s still worth pointing your telescope at the gas giant and contemplating exactly what you\u2019re seeing: the largest planet in our Solar System and its four largest moons.<\/p>\n

And somewhere in that system, a human spacecraft \u2013 NASA\u2019s Juno probe<\/a> \u2013 is having a look too.<\/p><\/body><\/html>\n
