On the same day as Mars reaches opposition<\/a>, the Red Planet will disappear behind the Moon in the early hours of tomorrow morning, 8 December, in an event known as a lunar occultation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The lunar occultation of Mars will be visible from most of North America, northern Europe and north Africa, and can be seen with the naked eye.<\/p>\n

Grab your binoculars or a small telescope, however, and the view will be quite spectacular.<\/p>\n

Our timings below are for the centre of the UK, but your viewing location will affect timings slightly, varying them by up to a few minutes.<\/p>\n

This is because locations away from the UK\u2019s centre make the Moon appear in a slightly different position relative to Mars.<\/p>\n

Start watching from 20 minutes or more before the stated event times, to make sure you don\u2019t miss anything.<\/p>\n

  • From the centre of the UK, disappearance begins at 04:57 UT<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Mars will take about 36 seconds<\/strong> to fully disappear<\/li>\n
  • Reappearance begins at 05:57 UT<\/strong>, the Red Planet also taking 34 seconds to reappear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>
