particular research paper we\u2019re discussing here involved some 80-odd co-authors \u2013 it represents a phenomenal collaborative effort of planetary scientists. <span href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/webb-telescope-first-detection-co2-exoplanet\/&quot;\">WASP-39b<\/a>, an exoplanet orbiting a star around 700 lightyears away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">It has roughly the mass of Saturn, is 30% larger than Jupiter, and orbits its Sun-like star 8 times closer than Mercury is to our Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">The team collected data across a broad range of the near-<a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\/&quot;\">infrared<\/a> spectrum while the planet was dioxide and water vapour, which have all previously been found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">But they also detected sulphur dioxide, a first for an exoplanet atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Sulphur dioxide is released by volcanism on terrestrial worlds \u2013 such as Earth, Venus and Jupiter\u2019s <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/io-jupiter-volcanic-moon\/&quot;\">moon Io<\/a> \u2013 but in gas giants like WASP-39b it must come from a different source.<span class=\"&quot;Apple-converted-space&quot;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">In our local gas giants, sulphur deep in the atmosphere exists as hydrogen sulphide gas, but as this is churned up to higher altitudes the energetic photons of ultraviolet rays from the Sun break apart the hydrogen sulphide and drive further chemical reactions to produce sulphur dioxide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Such UV-driven reactions are known as photochemistry, and in Earth\u2019s atmosphere, for example, produce the ozone layer by driving reactions of oxygen molecules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">This data on WASP-39b is the first concrete indication of photochemistry being crucial in the atmospheric composition of exoplanets too.<span
