Pagan (STScI)<\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"&quot;im-image-caption&quot;\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The new Webb image reveals the intricate structures of three <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/galaxy-clusters-groups\/&quot;\">galaxy clusters<\/a> \u2013 together forming a so-called \u2018megacluster\u2019 \u2013 in detail never seen before by astronomers.<\/p>\n<p>The image of Pandora\u2019s Cluster is actually a panoramic composed of four individual JWST images sewn together.<\/p>\n<p>It reveals 50,000 sources of near-<a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\/&quot;\">infrared<\/a> light, as observed by the Webb Telescope\u2019s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instrument.<\/p>\n<p>Webb scientists captured the image as part of the <a href=\"\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2021jwst.prop.2561L\/abstract&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER)<\/a> programme.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Pan\" of=\"\" pandora=\"\" cluster=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FM0boU-hZZQ?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>One particularly noteworthy feature of the image is that it displays a phenomenon that\u2019s known as <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-gravitational-lensing\/&quot;\">gravitational lensing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The combined mass and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-gravity-facts-about-force\/&quot;\">gravity<\/a> of the galaxy clusters warps and distorts the light of more distant galaxies, allowing them to be more easily observed.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, the galaxy megacluster is acting like a cosmic magnifying glass.<\/p>\n<p>The effect of this can be seen as arc-like streaks in the lower right of the image.<\/p>\n<p>This is light from distant galaxies passing through <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-spacetime\/&quot;\">spacetime<\/a> that has been warped by the combined mass of the galaxy clusters.<\/p>\n<p>The image was created by capturing exposures of 4\u20136 hours for a total of about 30 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the UNCOVER team will follow up with observations using Webb\u2019s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec).<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to gather more information about the lensed galaxies\u2019 compositions, in order to gain new insight into how early galaxies formed and evolved over time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read more about this story at <a href=\"\/\/esawebb.org\/news\/weic2305\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot;
