It\u2019s far too soon to be making predictions like that.<\/p>\n<p>The ball of ice and dust that has eyebrows raising and hopes rising is called C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS).<\/p>\n<p>It was spotted in February 2023 during a sky survey performed by <a href=\"\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">ATLAS \u2013 the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System<\/a> \u2013 using the 0.5-m f\/2 Schmidt reflector telescope operated at the Sutherland Observatory in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Back then it was just an uninspiring 18<sup>th<\/sup> magnitude spot on a photo, and it was given the equally uninspiring name \u2018A10SVYR\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;image-handler__container\" Credit: <a href=\"\/\/twitter.com\/romanov_filipp\/status\/1630916906583568387&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">@romanov_filipp<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"&quot;im-image-caption&quot;\"\/><\/div>\n<p>But when its orbit was calculated it was noticed that it had already been spotted by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China, on 9 January 2023, when it was magnitude 18.7.<\/p>\n<p>Follow-up observations revealed A10SVYR had a short tail, so it was designated a comet, and following the long-established naming convention it was given a name honouring both its discoverers: C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why is everyone talking about <span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Crunching the numbers showed that Comet A3\u2019s orbit will bring it close enough to both the Sun and the Earth in September\/October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>There is a good chance it will be visible to the naked eye, and has the <i>potential<\/i> to be a bright naked eye comet.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get carried away by this, but perhaps understandable.
