finally detected Iapetus at eastern elongation in 1705; the magnitude was only just above +13.0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">With my 15-inch reflector I can follow it all round its orbit, but when east of Saturn it is fainter than Cassini\u2019s other <span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\">three discoveries: Rhea, Tethys and Dione.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Iapetus lies well beyond the other major satellites, at a mean distance of 3.5 million kilometres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">The eccentricity is very low (0.029) but unlike the inner satellites the orbital inclination is 15.5\u00b0 to Saturn\u2019s equator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">The globe is triaxial (ellipsoid) \u2013 its dimensions are 747x749x713km with an equatorial bulge; it was said that the shape was like that of a walnut.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Black on white or white on black?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">The first puzzle to be solved (the \u2018zebra problem\u2019) was straightforward enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Was Iapetus a bright globe with a dark stain or a dark globe with a white deposit?<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Observations of the movement showed that the density was low and it followed that the globe must be made up largely of ice, together with rock, but the nature of the dark deposit remained a mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Carl Sagan even suggested that it was organic \u2013 but was it deep or wafer thin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">This was cleared up by the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/cassinis-top-10-images-of-saturn-and-its-moons\/&quot;\">Cassini probe<\/a>, launched in 1997, orbiting Saturn and sending back
