southeast of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/deneb\/&quot;\">Deneb<\/a>, 2.1\u00b0 east-northeast of mag. +3.9 Nu (<span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">\u03bd<\/span>) Cygni. Known as the Jewel Bug Nebula, it\u2019s around 3,000 lightyears away and being a youthful and rare proto-planetary nebula, is small at 0.2 x 0.1 lightyears across. The name reflects a common property of some planetary nebulae. Using direct vision through smaller apertures, a bright central star causes the fainter nebula to disappear from view. However, using <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-to-master-the-art-of-averted-vision\/&quot;\">averted vision<\/a> the nebula blinks into view again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\">Look for NGC 6826 along the line from Deneb (Alpha (<span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">\u03b1<\/span>) Cygni) towards Iota (<span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">\u03b9<\/span>) Cygni. It lies 2.6\u00b0 from Iota. The nebula has an integrated magnitude of +8.8 and a total apparent size of 27 x 24 arcseconds. An OIII filter works really well, revealing uneven textures. The two lobes are of unequal brightness, the southern one appearing smaller and brighter.
