Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"&quot;im-image-caption&quot;\"\/><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><strong>What each solar filter shows<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before you decide which filter to use when photographing the Sun, it pays to know the strengths of each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><strong>White-light filters<\/strong> show photospheric phenomena such as <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/sunspots\/&quot;\">sunspots<\/a>, sunspot groups, faculae, limb darkening, solar granulation and \u2013 very rarely \u2013 solar flares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Features in white light tend to change in form subtly over the course of a few hours or days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s2&quot;\"><strong>H-alpha filters<\/strong> reveal chromospheric and inner atmosphere (corona) features including active regions, plage, spots, spicules, filaments, fibrils, dark mottles, <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-prominence\/&quot;\">solar prominences<\/a> and flares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\"><strong>Calcium-K<\/strong> filters give views similar to white light, enhanced with elements of the solar chromosphere. This can include bright prominences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Active sunspot regions are particularly clear with a calcium-K filter, as are the bright plage regions associated with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">H-alpha views are the most dynamic and can change noticeably over the course of hours and sometimes minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p3&quot;\">Calcium-K
