Redirection Test (DART)<\/a> mission launched on 24 November 2021, its mission was simple, but spectacular:<\/p>\n<p>To travel to the the Didymos system \u2013 an asteroid orbited by moon Dimorphos \u2013 and smash into the latter.<\/p>\n<p>The mission\u2019s goal was to see whether a human-made spacecraft would be able to significantly deflect an asteroid that happened to be on a collision course with planet Earth.<\/p>\n<p>DART arrived at the system on 26 September 2022 and made its successful impact into Dimorphos\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>Professional telescopes around the world \u2013 and, indeed the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/webb-hubble-nasa-dart-images\/&quot;\">Hubble and James Webb space telescopes<\/a> \u2013 captured the impact, providing important data to mission scientists as to <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-dart-mission-success\/&quot;\">whether or not the DART mission had been using a network of telescopes made by Unistellar.<\/p>\n<p>The company makes \u2018smart\u2019 telescopes that can automatically locate and track celestial objects and display them on a computer screen, rather than through an eyepiece.<\/p>\n<p>Using Unistellar\u2019s <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/reviews\/telescopes\/unistellar-evscope-2-telescope\/&quot;\">eVscopes<\/a>, observers in Kenya and R\u00e9union Island were able to observe the DART impact.<\/p>\n<p>The team of citizen scientists, which included 8 astronomers from the SETI Institute and which was led by SETI Institute postdoctoral fellow Ariel Graykowski, published the results in the journal Nature in March 2023.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Unistellar\" video=\"\" of=\"\" impact=\"\" from=\"\" reunion=\"\" island.=\"\" captured=\"\" by=\"\" unistellar=\"\" citizen=\"\" scientist=\"\" bruno=\"\" payet=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;150&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GLqOKkfW5YQ?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>Key moments from the Unistellar observations included observations of brightening of the Didymos system by a factor of 10, caused by material ejected during the impact.<\/p>\n<p>The team were also able to calculate the ejected material\u2019s mass, speed and energy.<\/p>\n<p>They were even able to measure a change in colour at the time of impact of the DART spacecraft; an effect that currently remains unexplained.<\/p>\n<p>The citizen scientists were able to do so using their own telescopes, observing and collecting data on the NASA mission as the impact played out.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/citizen-science-how-get-involved-space-scientist\/&quot;\">citizen science<\/a> has long been a big part of astronomy, from observations of <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/meteor-showers-how-observe-record-shooting-stars\/&quot;\">meteor showers<\/a> and <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/sunspots\/&quot;\">sunspots<\/a> to the work of online citizen scientists in projects like Galaxy Zoo, this particular study observed the impact.<\/p>\n<p>From the SETI Institute, Ariel Graykowski, Ryan Lambert, Franck Marchis, Dorian Cazeneuve, Paul Dalba, Thomas Esposito, Daniel Peluso and Lauren Sgro contributed to the
