so-called Trojan planets, or co-orbital planets, which is when pairs of planets of similar mass share the same orbit around their host star.<\/p>\n<p>A similar example can be found in our own Solar System in the <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/jupiter-trojan-asteroids\/&quot;\">Trojan asteroids<\/a> of Jupiter, which are more than 12,000 rocky bodies that Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/span><\/figcaption><span class=\"&quot;im-image-caption&quot;\"\/><\/div>\n<p>A team of astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Atacama Desert of Chile observed the PDS 70 system, which is a star 400 lightyears away known to host two Jupiter-like planets called PDS 70b and PDS 70c.<\/p>\n<p>They spotted a cloud of debris at the location in PDS 70b\u2019s orbit where Trojans are thought to exist.<\/p>\n<p>Studying the Lagrangian zones \u2013 regions in a planet\u2019s orbit where gravitational equilibrium between the planet and host star can trap cosmic material \u2013 around PDS 70\u2019s orbit, the astronomers found evidence of a cloud of debris.<\/p>\n<p>That debris has a mass up to about twice that of Earth\u2019s Moon, and may well be evidence of a Trojan planet sharing the same orbit around the host star.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;Zooming\" in=\"\" on=\"\" the=\"\" pds=\"\" system=\"\" host=\"\" to=\"\" planet=\"\" and=\"\" a=\"\" possible=\"\" trojan=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0HWvXmfO5PU?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" web-share=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWho could imagine two worlds that share the duration of the year and the habitability conditions? Our work is the first evidence that this kind of world could exist,\u201d says Olga Balsalobre-Ruza, a student at the <a href=\"\/\/cab.inta-csic.es\/en\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Astrobiology in Madrid<\/a>, Spain, and led author of a paper published in <a href=\"\/\/www.aanda.org\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can imagine that a planet can share its orbit with thousands of asteroids as in the case of Jupiter, but it is mind blowing to me that planets could share the same orbit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research is a first step to look for co-orbital planets very early in their formation,\u201d says co-author Nuria Hu\u00e9lamo, a senior researcher at the Centre for Astrobiology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt opens up new questions on the formation of Trojans, how they evolve and how frequent they are in different planetary systems,\u201d says Itziar De Gregorio-Monsalvo, ESO Head of the Office for Science in Chile, who also contributed to this research.<\/p>\n<p>The team now plans to wait until after 2026, when they will go back to ALMA and observe whether PDS 70b and its \u2018sibling\u2019 cloud of debris move together around the host star.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read the full paper <a href=\"\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/archives\/releases\/sciencepapers\/eso2311\/eso2311a.pdf&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Tentative co-orbital submillimeter emission within the Lagrangian region L5 of the protoplanet PDS 70 b (PDF)<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Could two similar worlds orbit the same star, side by side?
