<p>Saturn and its rings may be the most iconic, instantly-recognisable body in the Solar System, after our own planet Earth, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Made mostly of ice, <a missions like the Cassini spacecraft, which sent back data and images that have taught planetary scientists so much about these amazing features.<\/p>\n<p>But, as we learn in astronomy, nothing lasts forever, and Saturn\u2019s rings are disappearing relatively quickly, cosmologically speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Just how much do we know about <a href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/saturn\/&quot;\">Saturn<\/a>, and when will its rings disappear?<\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\">James O\u2019Donoghue that symbolise science at a Science Festival, you\u2019ll almost always see images of Saturn. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"&quot;p1&quot;\"><b>What are Saturn\u2019s rings made of? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">They\u2019re made of ice that is nearly completely composed of water, with a little bit of dust that has been picked up over aeons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">The ice is made of fragments, from dust-sized particles all the way up to bus-sized pieces, which independently orbit Saturn, arranged so that the rings are only several metres in thickness overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p2&quot;\"><span class=\"&quot;s1&quot;\">The fragments are aligned into countless thin It\u2019s a complicated chain of chemical reactions but, essentially, the neutral water neutralises charged electrons, reducing the electron density.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"&quot;p5&quot;\"><span
