contact with the Voyager 2 spacecraft, after a human error nudged its antenna away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/a> hope the spacecraft will automatically realign its antenna and re-establish contact later in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Voyager 2 is currently 19.9 billion kilometres from Earth, sailing out of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/diy\/make-scale-solar-system-model\/\">Solar System<\/a> and into interstellar space.<\/p>\n<p>It is so far away it takes it\u2019s signals 18 hours to reach Earth.<\/p>\n<p>On 21 July, NASA sent a command to the spacecraft that accidentally misaligned its antenna by two degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Though only slightly off target, the huge distance mean the spacecraft is now unable to communicate with Earth, causing NASA to lose contact with Voyager 2.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-handler__container image-handler__container--full\" radio facilities in California in the US, Madrid in Spain and Canberra in Australia \u2013 which it uses to communicate with all of its interplanetary missions \u2013 for the next week or so, but the chances of finding any are slim.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the Voyager was built with such an eventuality in mind and so the spacecraft automatically realigns its antenna with Earth several times a year.<\/p>\n<p>The next such alignment is due on 15 October.<\/p>\n<p>The team will be listening out for it then in the hopes of re-establishing contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was Voyager 2\u2019s mission?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Voyager 2 launched from Earth on 20 August 1977, 16 days before its sister craft Voyager 1, with the aim of taking advantage of a once in a lifetime alignment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/voyagers-best-images-of-the-solar-system\/\">the outer planets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It flew past all four of the major outer planets, passing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/jupiter\/\">Jupiter<\/a> in 1979, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/guide-to-the-planets-saturn\/\">Saturn<\/a> in 1981, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/planets\/uranus\/\">Uranus<\/a> in 1986 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-the-planets-neptune\/\">Neptune<\/a> in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to have visited either the Sun and is currently 130 times the distance between the Earth and Sun away,\u00a0 (around 19.9 billion km).<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/voyager-2-reaches-interstellar-space\/\">5 November 2019<\/a>, its instruments measured a change in the particles surrounding it, indicating it had passed beyond the Sun\u2019s protective, magnetic bubble and was now in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/voyager-1-reaches-interstellar-space\/\">interstellar space<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Voyager 1 and 2 are the only spacecraft that have transmitted data from this distant region.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-handler__container
