{"id":49527,"date":"2023-09-12T16:50:48","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T16:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4f7f1389-1ed5-42e2-8091-c0936aed63d7"},"modified":"2023-09-13T10:32:32","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T10:32:32","slug":"jwst-finds-hints-of-life-on-alien-world","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/jwst-finds-hints-of-life-on-alien-world\/","title":{"rendered":"JWST finds hints of life on alien world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ezzy Pearson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 12 September 2023 at 16:50 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><h1 class=\"entry-title\">JWST finds hints of life on alien world<\/h1><p>A tantalising sign of alien life may have just been discovered on a distant exoplanet by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA<\/a>\u2019s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).<\/p><p>The telescope has made a potential detection of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) \u2013 a chemical that, on Earth, is only produced by life \u2013 in the atmosphere of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/water-detected-potentially-habitable-exoplanet\">potentially habitable world, K2-18 b<\/a>.<\/p><p>However, the discovery team were keen to emphasise the detection is still only tentative, requiring more data to confirm.<\/p><p>The observations did, however, make more robust detections of carbon dioxide and methane, suggesting the planet could be home to a liquid water ocean.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Spectrum of K2-18 b, obtained with Webb\u2019s NIRISS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) and NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), displays an abundance of methane and carbon dioxide in the exoplanet\u2019s atmosphere, as well as a possible detection of a molecule called dimethyl sulfide (DMS). K2-18 b, 8.6 times as massive as Earth, orbits the cool dwarf star K2-18 in the habitable zone and lies 120 light-years from Earth. Behind the graph is an illustration of the planet and star.]<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cThese results are the product of just two observations of K2-18 b, with many more on the way,\u201d says Savvas Constantinou from the University of Cambridge, who took part in the study. <\/p><p>\u201cThis means our work here is but an early demonstration of what Webb can observe in habitable-zone exoplanets.\u201d<\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-kind-of-planet-is-k2-18-b\"><strong>What kind of planet is K2-18 b?<\/strong><\/h2><p>K2-18b is 120 lightyears away and takes around 33 days to orbit its cool dwarf star.<\/p><p>It is 8.6 times the mass of Earth and 2.6 times its radius, making it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/mini-neptune-planet-gj-1214b\">sub-Neptune<\/a>.<\/p><p>These are planets with masses between Earth and Neptune that appear to be common in the Galaxy.<\/p><p>As there are no examples of these kinds of worlds in our Solar System planetary scientists have little idea of what either they might be like, meaning the worlds have become an area of intense study.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/sub-Neptune.jpg\" alt=\"Earth positioned next to the much larger Neptune.\" class=\"wp-image-140208\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Earth is the largest terrestrial planet in our Solar System, but then there is a jump up to the next largest, Neptune, which is four times the size. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Previous observations by Hubble in 2019 suggested K2-18 b has an atmosphere.<\/p><p>This makes it a prime target to learn more about these kinds of worlds as <a href=\"https:\/\/webbtelescope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JWST<\/a> is able to detect which chemicals might exist within that atmosphere.<\/p><p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/interview-angelos-tsiaras-exoplanet-k2-18b-search-water-universe\">Listen to our interview with Angelos Tsiaras to find out more about the discovery of K2-18 b&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><h2><strong>How did JWST examine K2-18 b\u2019s atmosphere?<\/strong><\/h2><p>JWST watches planets as they pass in front of (or transits) their stars.<\/p><p>As a planet transits, some of the starlight passes through its atmosphere, during which some of the chemicals in the atmosphere leave behind a signature in the light.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/how-to-detect-exoplanets-from-your-back-garden\">Astronomers are able to interpret these signatures<\/a> to work out the composition of the atmosphere of these distant worlds.<\/p><p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/how-to-detect-exoplanets-from-your-back-garden\">Discover how you can detect exoplanets from your own back garden. <\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/transiting_exoplanet-dd5a1fe-e1615386399790.png\" alt=\"A planet transits in front of its star.\" class=\"wp-image-44298\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Astronomers will be able to search for atmospheric biosignaturesin transiting exoplanets. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>JWST detected various carbon molecules in K2-18 b\u2019s atmosphere, including carbon dioxide and methane, but little ammonia.<\/p><p>This is what you would expect to see on a Hycean exoplanet \u2013 worlds up with up to 10 times the mass of Earth with a hydrogen atmosphere and which are thought to be covered with a liquid water ocean. \u00a0<\/p><p>These are thought to be one of the most likely places to find life beyond Earth.<\/p><p>\u201cOur findings underscore the importance of considering diverse habitable environments in the search for life elsewhere,\u201d explained Nikku Madhusudhan, from University of Cambridge who led the study.<\/p><p>\u201cTraditionally, the search for life on exoplanets has focused primarily on smaller rocky planets, but the larger Hycean worlds are significantly more conducive to atmospheric observations.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"580\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/11543_neptune-like-th.jpg\" alt=\"An icy planet with a small, reddish star in the distance. Credit: NASA<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><h2><strong>Did JWST find life on K2-18 b?<\/strong><\/h2><p>JWST\u2019s observations also found a hint of dimethyl sulphide (DMS).<\/p><p>Here on Earth, the chemical is only known to be produced by life, with the bulk of the chemical in the planet\u2019s atmosphere created by tiny marine algae, phytoplankton.<\/p><p>This detection, however, was not as robust as the others and so will require further validation.<\/p><p>\u201cUpcoming [JWST] observations should be able to confirm if DMS is indeed present in the atmosphere of K2-18b at significant levels,\u201d says Madhusudhan.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/Phytoplankton-scaled.jpeg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"Long thing green cells of phytoplankton viewed under a microscope\" class=\"wp-image-140210\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Algae cells under microscope magnification 10X<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Even if DMS is present, that doesn\u2019t mean that life has been detected on K2-18 b. Though there are no known geological or chemical processes on Earth that produce DMS naturally, the same may not be true on a sub-Neptune.<\/p><p>The planet is also very close to its star, meaning it is bombarded with a great deal of high-energy radiation, which any organisms on its surface would have to be able to survive.<\/p><p>It\u2019s also worth noting that the planet is 120 lightyears away, meaning that even if we could travel at nearly the speed of light, it would take more than a lifetime to reach the planet.<\/p><p>However, the discovery is an exciting first step on the journey towards finding life beyond our planet.<\/p><p>\u201cOur ultimate goal is the identification of life on a habitable exoplanet, which would transform our understanding of our place in the universe,\u201d concluded Madhusudhan. \u201cOur findings are a promising step towards a deeper understanding of Hycean worlds in this quest.\u201d<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ezzy Pearson Published: Tuesday, 12 September 2023 at 16:50 PM JWST finds hints of life on alien world A tantalising sign of alien life may have just been discovered on a distant exoplanet by NASA\u2019s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
