{"id":49637,"date":"2023-09-14T18:38:22","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T18:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bd29e2c4-351f-437f-89fa-587ee3668dbd"},"modified":"2023-09-14T20:32:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T20:32:30","slug":"andromeda-galaxy-image-wins-2023-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-awards","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/andromeda-galaxy-image-wins-2023-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Andromeda Galaxy image wins 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">See all the winning images from this year&#8217;s astrophotography competition. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Iain Todd\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 14 September 2023 at 18:38 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The winning images of the 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition have been revealed by the Royal Observatory Greenwich.<\/p><p>This year\u2019s winning image is<em> Andromeda, Unexpected<\/em>, which is not only a dramatic deep-sky astrophoto showing the closest spiral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxy<\/a> to our own, but also subject of scientific study.<\/p><p>Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner and Yann Sainty captured the image, which shows a huge plasma arc next to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/andromeda-galaxy\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest major galaxy to our own Milky Way, and astronomers are currently investigating the plasma arc seen in the image.<\/p><p>It could be the largest such structure nearest our Galaxy in the Universe.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Andromeda, Unexpected \u00a9 Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner, Yann Sainty, Location: Near Nancy, France. Equipment: Takahashi FSQ-106EDX4 telescope, Sky-Watcher EQ6 Pro mount, ZWO ASI2600MM Pro camera, 382 mm f\/3.6, multiple exposures between 1 and 600 seconds, 111 hours total exposure<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The winning images of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, now in its 15th year, were announced on 14 September 2023 in an online ceremony.<\/p><p>This year\u2019s competition saw judges wowed by over 4,000 entries from 64 countries.<\/p><p>\u201cIt&#8217;s an enormous honour for our team to receive this important award and we are grateful for all the support, friendship and encouragement we have received along our journey\u201d say the winning astrophotographers.<\/p><p>\u201cIt encourages us to continue to pursue our passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/a-beginners-guide-to-astrophotography\">astrophotography<\/a> and, of course, research with dedication.\u201d<\/p><p>Meanwhile the Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year award in 2023 went to Runwei Xu and Binyu Wang, a pair of 14-year-old photographers from China who captured the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/running-chicken-nebula\">Running Chicken Nebula<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/26-Young_The-Running-Chicken-Nebula_72dpi-1024x1015.jpg?fit=800,793\" alt=\"The Running Chicken Nebula \u00a9 Runwei Xu and Binyu Wang. Taken with an ASA N20 f\/3.8 Newtonian telescope, ASA DDM85 mount, FLI Proline 16803 camera, 1,900 mm f\/3.8, 5.5 hours total exposure<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Other winning images in Astrophotography Photographer of the Year 15 include <em>Brushtroke<\/em>, which is a view of the aurora captured from Lapland, Finland, and <em>Mars-Set<\/em>, which shows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/mars-lunar-occultation-8-december\">8 December 2022 lunar occultation of Mars<\/a>, captured by Ethan Chappel from Texas, USA.<\/p><p>Eduardo Schaberger Poupeau won the \u2018Our Sun\u2019 category for <em>A Sun Question<\/em>, which shows a filament on the Sun in the shape of a question mark.<\/p><p>In the People &amp; Space category, Vikas Chander topped the list with a view of the ship Zeila stranded off the Skeleton Coast off Namibia.<\/p><p>A wonderful view of Venus captured by Tom Williams took the Planets, Comets &amp; Asteroids category, while ethereal \u2018cosmic fireworks\u2019 are the subject of the Skyscapes category winner, captured by Angel An.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/16-PCA_Suspended_in_a_Sunbeam_72dpi.jpg\" alt=\"Suspended in a Sunbeam \u00a9 Tom Williams.
