Image Processing Credit: Geronimo Villanueva (NASA\/GSFC), Alyssa Pagan (STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Now, Europa has been found to have a carbon source in studies of the icy moon using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-observe-universe\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>.<\/p><p>The study shows that the carbon likely originated in the subsurface ocean, rather than being delivered by meteorites or other sources.<\/p><p>And the study also suggests that the carbon was deposited relatively recently.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-where-is-the-carbon-on-europa\"><strong>Where is the carbon on Europa?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Studies using the Webb Telescope revealed that carbon dioxide is most abundant on Europa in a region called Tara Regio.<\/p><p>This is a geologically young area of resurface terrain known as &#8216;chaos terrain&#8217;.<\/p><p>This means that in this region the icy surface has been disrupted, and that there could have been interplay of material between the surface and the liquid ocean below.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1259\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/09\/Europa-Ice-Rafting-8850346.jpg\" alt=\"Galileo's view of a thin ice crust in the Conamara region of the moon Europa. Image Processing Credit: Geronimo Villanueva (NASA\/GSFC), Alyssa Pagan (STScI)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Previous studies of the icy moons of the Solar System have concentrated on the fact that some of these bodies have liquid oceans beneath their frozen crusts.<\/p><p>Because liquid water is a key ingredient for life as we know it on Earth, moons like Enceladus and Europa are potentially habitable, and may even be able to support microbial life.<\/p><p>This latest revelation that Europa also contains carbon &#8211; which has likely originated from the subsurface ocean itself &#8211; is important because carbon is an element needed for life.<\/p><p>\u201cOn Earth, life likes chemical diversity \u2013 the more diversity, the better. We\u2019re carbon-based life. Understanding the chemistry of Europa\u2019s ocean will help us determine whether it\u2019s hostile to life as we know it, or if it might be a good place for life,\u201d says Geronimo Villanueva of NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, lead author of one of two independent papers describing the findings.<\/p><p>\u201cWe now think that we have observational evidence that the carbon we see on Europa\u2019s surface came from the ocean. That&#8217;s not a trivial thing. Carbon is a biologically essential element,\u201d adds Samantha Trumbo of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, lead author of the second paper analysing the data.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-next\"><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1321\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/06\/Europa-clipper-mission-76d9047-e1596529537785.jpg\" alt=\"An artist's impression of the Europa Clipper exploring Jupiter's moon Europa. Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Future missions to Jupiter&#8217;s icy moons are planned, like NASA&#8217;s Europa Clipper spacecraft and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/juice-jupiter-moons\">European Space Agency&#8217;s JUICE mission<\/a>.<\/p><p>Europa Clipper, which is due to launch in October 2024, will perform dozens of close flybys of Europa, gathering information about its potential habitability.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/watch-launch-esa-juice-mission-jupiter\">ESA&#8217;s JUICE mission launched in April 2023<\/a> and is currently on its way to the Jovian system.<\/p><p>\u201cPrevious observations from the Hubble Space Telescope show evidence for ocean-derived salt in Tara Regio,\u201d says Trumbo.<\/p><p>\u201cNow we\u2019re seeing that carbon dioxide is heavily concentrated there as well. We think this implies that the carbon probably has its ultimate origin in the internal ocean.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cScientists are debating how much Europa\u2019s ocean connects to its surface. I think that question has been a big driver of Europa exploration,\u201d said Villanueva.<\/p><p>\u201cThis suggests that we may be able to learn some basic things about the ocean\u2019s composition even before we drill through the ice to get the full picture.\u201d<\/p><h2 id=\"h-plumes-on-europa\"><strong>Plumes on Europa?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/04\/Enceladus-Cassini-abd86ce.jpg\" alt=\"This image captured by the Cassini spacecraft shows plumes of water ice erupting from the surface of Enceladus. Do similar plumes exist on Jupiter\u2019s moon Europa?Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/SSI<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One of the key revelations of the Cassini mission at Saturn was evidence of plumes erupting from beneath the surface of moon Enceladus.<\/p><p>In fact, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/cassini-prepares-for-enceladus-plume-dive\">Cassini spacecraft was even able to make plume dives<\/a>, analysing the material erupting from Enceladus into space.<\/p><p>In June 2023, scientists studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/cassini-mission-phosphorus-enceladus\">Cassini data found phosphorous, a key ingredient for life, at Enceladus<\/a>.<\/p><p>And observations with the Hubble Space Telescope have previously detected possible evidence of plumes at Europa.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1042\" height=\"872\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/08\/Europa_water_vapour-4214f8d-e1566371545727.jpg\" alt=\"A Hubble Space Telescope image of Europa showing suspected plumes of water vapour erupting at the 7 o'clock mark.
