Find out when it&#8217;s happening and how to see it online. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jamie Carter\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 26 September 2023 at 10:13 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The October 14 annular solar eclipse is one of the most anticipated astronomical events of 2023.<\/p><p>Indeed, this autumn will bring about a spectacular phenomenon that observers in North America are really looking forward to.<\/p><p>Passing across 10 countries and running a decent path down through the US, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/annular-solar-eclipse\">annular solar eclipse<\/a> of 14 October 2023 \u2013 also called a \u2018ring of fire\u2019 eclipse \u2013 will be watched by millions of people.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Eclipse-chasers donning eclipse glasses to safely observe a solar eclipse. Credit: Leo Patrizi \/ Getty &#8211; Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>For the US, the event will be something of a warm-up to a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/total-solar-eclipse-8-april-2024\">total solar eclipse exactly 177 days later on 8 April 2024<\/a>.<\/p><p>However, the sight of a bright ring around the Moon \u2014 something that can only be viewed safely using solar filters \u2013 will be something to savour for eclipse-chasers.<\/p><p>As well as lasting for up to 5 minutes 17 seconds, it\u2019s way more accessible that the four remaining \u2018ring of fire\u2019 eclipses this decade in the Pacific, Patagonia, the Amazon and Siberia. <\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-is-an-annular-solar-eclipse\"><strong>What is an annular solar eclipse?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/total-eclipse-vs-annular-eclipse-diagram-1024x818.jpg?fit=800,639\" alt=\"Total eclipse vs annular eclipse explained. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon\u2019s apparent size in the sky is slightly too small to completely cover the Sun\u2019s disk, leaving an annulus visible around the Moon\u2019s silhouette for a few minutes.<\/p><p>An annular eclipse is commonly called a \u2018ring of fire\u2019. It occurs because the Moon has a slightly elliptical orbit of the Earth and is slightly too far away for its shadow cone to touch the Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p><p>During this eclipse, the Moon will cover almost 91% of the Sun&#8217;s disk.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-where-is-the-annular-eclipse-happening-and-at-what-time\"><strong>Where is the annular eclipse happening, and at what time?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"931\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/03\/14-october-2023-us-eclipse-chart-e6bb007-e1690360475971.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing a map of the USA and paths for different degrees of annularity for 14 October 2023 annular eclipse. Photo by Huang Shan\/VCG via Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The 14 October eclipse \u2013 which will bring a big partial solar eclipse to all of North America and much of South America \u2013 has a narrow \u2018path of annularity\u2019 that starts south of Alaska (see diagram above).<\/p><p>This path of annularity marks locations from where the full annular eclipse will be visible.<\/p><p>The Moon&#8217;s shadow will move across the US, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil.<\/p><p>At its widest, the path of annularity will reach about 140 miles.
