{"id":49706,"date":"2023-09-28T08:45:49","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T08:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ab044676-db38-45ec-b6a3-a949a8ba42a1"},"modified":"2023-09-28T09:32:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T09:32:33","slug":"how-the-natural-world-is-connected-to-the-moon-and-stars","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/how-the-natural-world-is-connected-to-the-moon-and-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"How the natural world is connected to the Moon and stars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">A consideration of the natural world\u2019s connection to the Moon and stars <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jon Powell\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 28 September 2023 at 08:45 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Have you ever wondered how the natural world is connected to the Moon and the night sky?<\/p><p>Watching a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/crescent-moon-guide\">crescent Moon<\/a> slowly drift westward in the fading light of an evening sky may not be all that scientific, but it does serve as a reminder that perhaps we aren\u2019t the only ones drawn to its movement across the heavens.<\/p><p>Indeed, humankind is just one of many living things touched \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VP2ke8an81E?si=8IjvdddPv42SqxVz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">By the Light of the Silvery Moon<\/a>\u201d, as Doris Day sang in the 1953 film of the same name.<\/p><p>The umbilical-chord existence that tethers Earth to the Moon is an incredibly strong bond.<\/p><p>Both Earth and the Moon duet their way around the Milky Way: a bond that\u2019s absolutely crucial for so many species.<\/p><p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/astronomy-nature-wildlife\">How stargazing gets you closer to wildlife<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A fishing boat sails under a full Moon in Xianrendao in China&#8217;s northeastern Liaoning province 17 September 2016. Credit: JOHANNES EISELE\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-turtles-and-the-moon\">Turtles and the Moon<\/h2><p>For the baby turtle after hatching amid the sand, the gaze of its freshly opened eyes focuses in on the moonlight reflected off the nearby sea, acting as a beacon to guide the turtle safely to the water\u2019s edge. <\/p><p>Interestingly, to the ancient Scots, Norse, Polynesians and Native Americans, the shell of a turtle was of enormous interest.\u00a0<\/p><p>The shell, when viewed from above, was seen to comprise 13 major inner segments and 28 outer segments around the shell\u2019s edge.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-124770620-1024x672.jpg?fit=800,525\" alt=\"The shell of a green turtle. Credit: Gerard Soury \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>These divisions were interpreted as 13 Moons and 28 days, the equivalent to 364 days plus one day of rest.<\/p><p>No doubt you can buy a calendar with turtles on it today; but to them the turtle itself was a 13-month calendar, incorporating 13 Moon cycles a year, each made up of 27\u201329 days.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-migration-and-the-lunar-cycle\"><strong>Migration and the lunar cycle<\/strong><\/h2><p>Turning to birds, the European nightjar\u2019s migratory pattern is synchronised with lunar cycles.<\/p><p>Aside from the Moon, most songbirds like thrushes and warblers migrate at night, choosing a single star like Polaris &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/how-find-polaris-north-star\">North Star<\/a> &#8211; for guidance.<\/p><p>They gauge the movement of the constellations relative to the star, thus calculating the direction they need to be travelling.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-1185191985-1024x733.jpg?fit=800,573\" alt=\"Silhouette of a tree with a bird on it in front of a bright full Moon. Credit: Credit:Yaorusheng \/ Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-141074\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Yaorusheng \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>At night, the air is cooler and calmer too, meaning that birds use less energy on their long migratory journeys.<\/p><p>With the added bonus that travelling under the cover of darkness means less predators.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-moths-and-light-pollution\"><strong>Moths and light pollution<\/strong><\/h2><p>The moth, like other insects, engages in behaviour known as transverse orientation, navigating by flying at a constant angle relative to a light source, such as the Moon.<\/p><p>However, if the moth were to fly past an outside light, the angle of light relative to the moth changes, confusing the insect\u2019s delicate navigation.<\/p><p>That is why you see them bumping into lights again and again, as if trying to rectify the disorientation. <\/p><p>Entomologists have found that moths are less attracted to artificial lights during the week of a full Moon than the week of a new Moon.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/GettyImages-112299688-1024x766.jpg?fit=800,598\" alt=\"Moths aren't attracted to lightbulbs: they're disorientated by them.
