{"id":50179,"date":"2023-10-11T13:07:55","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T13:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bf8a8ebb-76d9-4a5c-8667-3a6a94767109"},"modified":"2023-10-11T13:32:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-11T13:32:35","slug":"celebrate-the-eclipse-with-our-solar-eclipse-cookies","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/celebrate-the-eclipse-with-our-solar-eclipse-cookies\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate the eclipse with our solar eclipse cookies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Make these easy eclipse cookies and celebrate totality. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Katharine Kilgour\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 11 October 2023 at 13:07 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>If you&#8217;re hosting an eclipse party for an upcoming solar eclipse, our eclipse cookies are a great way to get everyone excited for the main event.<\/p><p>My daughter was just a couple of weeks old when she witnessed her first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\">solar eclipse<\/a>.<\/p><p>We may have had better eclipse viewing in the south of England, but nevertheless I sat on the back steps of our house in Glasgow with her in my arms as the sky dimmed and the birds went silent.<\/p><p>This was her first astronomical event!<\/p><p><strong><em>Find out when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/solar-lunar-eclipse-guide-when-where\">next eclipse<\/a> is occurring and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-to-view-the-eclipse\">how to safely view an eclipse<\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"\/><p>When we watched Brian Cox\u2019s <em>Wonders<\/em> series we were enthralled as the Moon eclipsed the Sun over the Ganges.<\/p><p>It truly is one of the wonders of the cosmos that our Solar System is aligned with the Moon and Sun sized and positioned so that a beautiful event such as a solar eclipse occur.<\/p><p>We were able to catch a glimpse of this wonder ourselves in 2015 when the Solar eclipse reached nearer totality in Scotland.<\/p><p>That morning the day dawned grey with cloud cover: not promising!<\/p><p>My son and I were hoping to view the eclipse on our walk to school.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/GettyImages-549558789-1024x683.jpg?fit=800,534\" alt=\"Image of the 2015 solar eclipse from Perthshire, Scotland. Credit: Steven Robinson Pictures \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As we set out, there was cloud cover but the light was fading.<\/p><p>Halfway to school the cloud thinned, a glimpse of a clipped Sun then \u2026 cloud cover!<\/p><p>Reaching the school gates, the clouds thinned again sufficiently to reveal a crescent Sun! Wow!<\/p><p>Meanwhile my daughter had convinced her chemistry teacher that an eclipse was more important than the periodic table, at least for one lesson.<\/p><p>She headed to the top of the science building and as the clouds thinned she glimpsed the Sun eclipsed over the city.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/Cloudy-Eclipse-over-Glasgow-43f8e18.jpg\" alt=\"Cloudy Eclipse over Glasgow\" class=\"wp-image-24271\" title=\"Cloudy Eclipse over Glasgow\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Katherine&#8217;s capture of the cloudy total solar eclipse over Glasgow of 20 March 2015<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"is-layout-flow is-layout-flow wp-block-group highlight-box\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\"><p>This recipe is for cookies in the American style: two biscuits sandwiched with buttercream.<\/p><p>The idea is to create different patterns on each cookies, so that you can recreate the different stages of the eclipse that occur as the Moon&#8217;s silhouette slowly makes it&#8217;s way across the solar disc.<\/p><p>For this, you&#8217;ll need to make two batches of the cookie dough: one with custard powder to represent the Sun<\/p><p>The other with cocoa powder to represent the Moon taking a &#8216;bite&#8217; out of the solar disc.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"5472\" height=\"3648\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1221762148-ad937c7.jpg\" alt=\"A composite images showing the stages of a solar eclipse. Photo by Vishal Bhatnagar\/NurPhoto via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-eclipse-cookies-ingredients\"><strong>Eclipse cookies ingredients<\/strong><\/h2><h3 id=\"h-cookies\"><strong>Cookies<\/strong><\/h3><p>We need two batches of biscuit dough each made with:<\/p><ul><li>150g Butter<\/li><li>50g icing sugar<\/li><li>150g plain flour<\/li><li>2 tbsps custard powder OR 2 tbsps cocoa powder<\/li><\/ul><h3 id=\"h-icing\">Icing<\/h3><ul><li>150g icing sugar<\/li><li>25g Butter<\/li><li>\u00bd teaspoon vanilla essence<\/li><li>A little hot water<\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"h-eclipse-cookies-recipe-step-by-step\"><strong>Eclipse cookies recipe, step-by-step<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><\/div><h3 id=\"h-step-1-butter-and-sugar\"><strong>Step 1 &#8211; wrap and chill<\/h3><p>Bring the dough together into a ball and wrap in cling-film.<\/p><p>Refrigerate for half an hour, or until you are ready to roll!<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-4-make-your-cocoa-batch\"><strong>Step 4 &#8211; make your cocoa batch<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-3-4-1c712fc.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 3\" class=\"wp-image-24276\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wrap the dough in cling film and make another batch, this time using cocoa powder instead of custard powder<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Make the second batch of dough replacing the custard powder with cocoa powder.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-5-cut-the-shapes\">Step 5 &#8211; cut the shapes<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-5a-305324d.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 4\" class=\"wp-image-24278\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roll the dough out and cut with a cookie cutter<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Roll each colour of dough out to the thickness of a pound coin.<\/p><p>Use a circular cutter to cut out the light and dark discs.<\/p><p>I used a 5cm cutter and made 48 biscuits from each batch of dough.<\/p><p>If you use a cutter with a larger diameter you will need to bake the cookies for a little longer.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-6-layer-the-cookies\">Step 6 &#8211; layer the cookies<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-6a_0-6c3c2f5.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 5\" class=\"wp-image-24279\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Assemble the cocoa discs on the lighter discs to resemble the various phases of a solar eclipse<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Pair each light circle with a dark one and use the same cutter to cut varying sizes of crescents, or degrees of totality.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-6b_0-b9241ae.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 6\" class=\"wp-image-24280\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Use the cookie cutter to produce the phases of the eclipse<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 id=\"h-step-7-prepare-for-baking\">Step 7 &#8211; prepare for baking<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1596\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-7_0-0200e4e.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 7\" class=\"wp-image-24281\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Keep your pairs together and bake the cookies<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Keeping the pairs of biscuits together, swap the cut pieces and place them on a baking tray.<\/p><p>You will have pairs of cookies, one looking like the Sun with a \u2018bite\u2019 taken.<\/p><p>The other will be its reverse!<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-8-bake\">Step 8 &#8211; bake!<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-8_0-9795376.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 8\" class=\"wp-image-24282\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bake at 180\u00b0C \/ 350\u00b0F for about 10 mins<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Bake the cookies at 180\u00b0C or 350\u00b0F for about 10 minutes.<\/p><p>When cooked they will be firm but the pale parts will not be coloured.<\/p><p>Allow to cool on the baking tray for a couple of minutes.<\/p><p>Move to a cooling rack until cold.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-9-make-the-buttercream\"><strong>Step 9 &#8211; make the buttercream<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-9_0-965cc8a.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 9\" class=\"wp-image-24283\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mix together the icing sugar, butter and 10ml hot water to make your buttercream filling.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Make your buttercream filling.<\/p><p>Mix together the icing sugar, butter and 10ml hot water.<\/p><p>Add a little more hot water, a few drops at a time until your icing is a spreading consistency.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-10-spread-the-buttercream\">Step 10 &#8211; spread the buttercream<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/American-Eclipse-step-10_0-86c151b.jpg\" alt=\"Solar eclipse cookies recipe step 10\" class=\"wp-image-24284\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Spread the buttercream filling on the cookies and sandwich them together.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Spread a teaspoon of buttercream onto one half of each pair of biscuits and sandwich them together.<\/p><p>Alternatively you can use a piping bag to pipe the buttercream on.<\/p><h3 id=\"h-step-11-serve\">Step 11 &#8211;
