Credit: courtesy of the DSCOVR EPIC team<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-what-does-the-image-show\"><strong>What does the image show?<\/strong><\/h2><p>On October 14 2023, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/annular-solar-eclipse\">annular solar eclipse<\/a> was visible across the US.<\/p><p>This &#8216;ring of fire&#8217; eclipse appeared from Earth as a glowing ring, caused by the Moon passing in front of the Sun.<\/p><p>But unlike during a total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\">solar eclipse<\/a>, when the Moon blocks out the entire disc of the Sun, during an annular solar eclipse the Moon only covers a portion of the Sun<\/p><p>This leaves a ring of sunlight visible instead.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/05\/GettyImages-1251234223-31c1a26.jpg\" alt=\"An annular solar eclipse as seen on 21 June 2020 over Xiamen, Fujian Province, China.
