{"id":50818,"date":"2023-10-24T08:16:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T08:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d76a7b5f-c80a-42ac-b6aa-428d1c70d4df"},"modified":"2023-10-24T08:32:33","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T08:32:33","slug":"see-the-28-october-partial-lunar-eclipse-this-week","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/see-the-28-october-partial-lunar-eclipse-this-week\/","title":{"rendered":"See the 28 October partial lunar eclipse this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Observers in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe will be able to observe a partial lunar eclipse this autumn. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jamie Carter\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 24 October 2023 at 08:16 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>This week, UK and Europe observers will be treated to the 28 October partial lunar eclipse, which will show part of the Moon clipped by Earth\u2019s dark umbral shadow.<\/p><p>For UK and Europe eclipse chasers, this week&#8217;s lunar eclipse will be a welcome sight and one of the naked-eye highlights of the 2023 astronomical calendar.<\/p><p>After all, eclipse-chasers in the UK and mainland Europe haven&#8217;t had much to get excited about on their home turf this year!<\/p><p><em><strong>Read our guide and find out when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/solar-lunar-eclipse-guide-when-where\">next eclipse<\/a> is taking place<\/strong><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lunar eclipse, Jupiter, meteor showers | Night sky, October 2023\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8ehy5eAJxKM?start=1319&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/hybrid-total-solar-eclipse-20-april-2023\/\">hybrid solar eclipse of 20 April<\/a> was only visible over a narrow path around Indonesia and Australia.<\/p><p>The recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/october-14-annular-solar-eclipse\">partial solar eclipse on October 14<\/a> was restricted to observers in North America and South America.<\/p><p>However, there is a glimmer of relief in the shape of a partial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/lunar-eclipses\/\">lunar eclipse<\/a> that will be visible over the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe on 28 October 2023.<\/p><p>The 28 October partial lunar eclipse will also be visible over much of Africa, the Middle East and Asia, but will only be visible in the eastern Americas during Moonrise, and in western Australia during Moonset.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 8 November 2022 lunar eclipse captured by Anupam Naskar from Kolkata, India.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>This will be a small partial lunar eclipse, meaning only a relatively narrow portion of the Moon will be subject to darkening caused by Earth&#8217;s shadow passing over its surface.<\/p><p>You can see the extreme southern part of the Moon clipped by Earth\u2019s dark, umbral shadow between 20:35-21:53 BST (19:35-20:53 UT).<\/p><p>As an added bonus, this autumnal lunar eclipse will occur in the evening.<\/p><p>It will also be accompanied by the planet Jupiter in the night sky, making for a great observing and imaging opportunity.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-is-a-lunar-eclipse\"><strong>What is a lunar eclipse?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/10\/lunar-eclipse-penumbra-diagram-209e530.jpg\" alt=\"Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon passes into the shadow that Earth casts in space.
