{"id":50867,"date":"2023-11-02T08:18:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T08:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1dac5741-5217-488b-b516-ad21a7ab41e2"},"modified":"2023-11-02T08:32:28","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T08:32:28","slug":"astronomers-spot-most-massive-star-ever-seen-swallowed-by-a-black-hole","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/astronomers-spot-most-massive-star-ever-seen-swallowed-by-a-black-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"Astronomers spot most massive star ever seen swallowed by a black hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Star is one of the largest ever witnessed being destroyed this way <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Ezzy Pearson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 02 November 2023 at 08:18 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>A star that was caught being devoured by a giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black hole<\/a> in a nearby galaxy turned out to have been one of the largest stars seen being consumed in this way, a recent study has found.\u00a0<\/p><p>It&#8217;s one of the biggest stars ever seen destroyed in a tidal disruption event.<\/p><p>The event, called ASASSN-14li, was spotted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxy<\/a> located 290 million lightyears away in 2014, but astronomers have been studying the aftermath ever since.<\/p><p>It occurred when the star strayed too close to a black hole and was torn apart \u2013 what is known as a tidal disruption event.<\/p><p>Much of the star\u2019s gas left over from the event remained in orbit, but a portion was blown away by strong winds created by the black hole\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/accretion-disk\">accretion disk<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Quick Look: A Giant Black Hole Destroys a Massive Star\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zR4dfEYSnUI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
