Credit: NASA\/ESA\/NSF\u2019s NOIRLab\/Mark Garlick\/Mahdi Zamani, NASA\/ESA\/STScI\/Ashley Chrimes (ESA-ESTEC\/Radboud University)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Their short-lived nature makes them difficult to spot, and the first, dubbed \u2018the Cow\u2019, was only discovered in 2018.\u00a0<\/p><p>Since then, they\u2019ve been spotted at a rate of about one per year, mostly in the spiral arms of local galaxies.<\/p><p>That led astronomers to believe they were unusual supernovae generated by huge but short-lived stars. <\/p><p>This latest event, though \u2013 called AT2023fhn or \u2018the Finch\u2019, and first observed on 10 April 2023 \u2013 appears to have occurred not within a local galaxy, but in the space between two.<\/p><p>&#8220;The more we learn about Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients, the more they surprise us,&#8221; says European Space Agency research fellow Ashley Chrimes, who led the study.<\/p><p>&#8220;We\u2019ve now shown that LFBOTs can occur a long way from the centre of the nearest galaxy, and the location of the Finch is not what we expect for any kind of supernova.&#8221;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full has-lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"959\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/AT2023fhn-the-Finch.jpg\" alt=\"The blue flash of the Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient known as \u2018the Finch\u2019. Credit: NASA\/ESA\/NSF\u2019s NOIRLab\/Mark Garlick\/Mahdi Zamani, NASA\/ESA\/STScI\/Ashley Chrimes (ESA-ESTEC\/Radboud University)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-what-else-could-the-finch-be\"><strong>What else could &#8216;the Finch&#8217; be?<\/strong><\/h2><p>There are other possible explanations.<\/p><p>It could be that the event is a collision between two neutron stars, where one is highly magnetised and so amplifies the explosion.<\/p><p>Alternatively, Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transients could be stars being torn apart by intermediate black holes with a mass between 100 and 1,000 times that of the Sun.<\/p><p>These are thought to lie in globular clusters, which would evade Hubble\u2019s view but could be found in future observations by the James Webb Space Telescope.<\/p><p>&#8220;The discovery poses many more questions than it answers,&#8221; says Chrimes. &#8220;More work is needed to figure out which of the many possible explanations is the right one.&#8221;<\/p><h2><strong>Turn to the Vera C Rubin Observatory<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/07\/DSC1186-CC-b728756.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the Milky Way rising over the Vera C.
