The Space Station is equivalent in volume to a Boeing 747 and has been occupied continuously for more than 22 years.<\/p>
Over 270 different people have visited the ISS, which is a considerable amount of human beings having been confined in an air-tight space, living, breathing, eating, working and going to the toilet.<\/p>
So what does the International Space Station smell like?<\/p> Luckily, astronauts have been vocal about their experiences on board the Space Station, and have revealed how they’ve perceived its unique smell.<\/p> Unsurprisingly, it\u2019s tricky to keep a continuously occupied space station smelling sweet.<\/p> American NASA astronaut Scott Kelly told Wired<\/em> magazine<\/a> what he thought the International Space Station smells like.<\/p> He said “I was touring the Harris County Jail [in Texas], and there\u2019s this room that smells like space station \u2013 combination of antiseptic, garbage, and body odour.\u201d<\/p> Kelly added that in the absence of gravity<\/a>, bodily smells \u2013 such as farts \u2013 tend to linger.<\/p> UK astronaut Tim Peake said the ISS smell is \u201clike a barbecue that\u2019s gone wrong\u201d, while Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti<\/a> mentioned a \u201cpeculiar odour\u201d she had to adjust to while working on board the Space Station.<\/p> Tim Peake has also spoken about what space smells like<\/a>, describing it as “like static electricity”.<\/p>![\"Scott](\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/04-Scott-Kelly-fruit-0b9321a.jpg\")
