Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI, Amy Simon (NASA-GSFC)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-what-are-saturn-s-ring-spokes\"><strong>What are Saturn&#8217;s ring spokes?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Saturn&#8217;s ring spokes are transient features. They rotate along with the planet&#8217;s rings, but only appear for 2 or 3 rotations of the rings around Saturn.<\/p><p>During active periods, new spokes regularly appear, adding to the intricate patterns within the icy ring material.<\/p><p>The spokes may look tiny compared with Saturn, but their length and width can be longer that Earth&#8217;s diameter.<\/p><h2><strong>Exploring Saturn&#8217;s ring spokes<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"513\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/05voyager-saturn-rings-37810f7.jpg\" alt=\"Saturn rings with 'spoke' features in the inner B-ring. Credit: NASA\/JPL<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Saturn&#8217;s ring spokes were first imaged by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1981, and were subsequently seen by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/cassini-mission\">NASA Cassini mission<\/a>, which ended in 2017.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/hubble-space-telescope-facts-history\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>&#8216;s images of the spokes reveal that their frequency is seasonal.<\/p><p>Hubble&#8217;s observations are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2018hst..prop15502S\/abstract#:~:text=Long time base observations of,data for time-domain studies.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy<\/a> (OPAL) project that monitors weather changes on the four outer planets of the Solar System.<\/p><p>Hubble images show the spokes first appearing in OPAL data in 2021, but only on the morning (left) side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-the-rings-of-saturn\">Saturn&#8217;s rings<\/a>.<\/p><p>Data shows both the number and contrast of the spokes vary with Saturn&#8217;s seasons, which last about 7 years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/12\/hubble-saturn-ring-spokes-labelled-1024x576.png?fit=800%2C450\" alt=\"Labelled image of Saturn and its ring spokes captured by the Hubble Space Telescope on 22 October 2023.
