Some stars appear red and some stars are blue. If you&#8217;ve ever noticed this, you might have wondered why.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Take a quick glance up at the night sky and you can be forgiven for thinking that it only exists in black and white, with distant stars appearing as pinpricks of white light against a dark background.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But next time you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/stargazing-top-tips\/\">stargazing<\/a>, look a bit closer and even with the naked eye, you\u2019ll start to see that the Universe is awash with colour.<\/p><p><em><strong>For more advice, read our guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/astronomy-for-beginners\/\">astronomy for beginners<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Red and blue stars captured by the Hubble Space Telescope Credit: ESA\/Hubble\/ NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">In the colder months, my favourite sight on a clear night is the familiar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/orion-constellation-best-targets-observe\/\">Orion constellation<\/a>, and it\u2019s within this pattern of stars that we can see a classic example of colours in the night sky.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Look carefully at the star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/star-betelgeuse\/\">Betelgeuse<\/a> \u2013 Orion\u2019s right shoulder (assuming he\u2019s facing us) \u2013 and you\u2019ll notice that it has an orange-red tinge to it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Compare this with the star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/star-rigel\/\">Rigel<\/a>, on Orion\u2019s left foot, and you\u2019ll see that Rigel appears much more blue-white.<\/p><p>Why is this? Credit: iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The reason stars look different colours &#8211; some are red, some are blue &#8211; is all to do with their temperatures.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s the opposite to what you might think: red stars like Betelgeuse are actually cooler than blue stars like Rigel.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">I say cooler, but bear in mind that the surface temperature of Betelgeuse is still around 3,200\u00baC, compared to Rigel\u2019s 10,700\u00baC.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The colour of stars may seem counterintuitive based on our everyday experiences of linking colour to temperature (think colour-coding on taps: red for hot and blue for cold) but it\u2019s the same principle as when metal is heated in a forge.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">First you\u2019ll see it start to glow red, then as its temperature increases the metal glows a blue-white.<\/p><h2 class=\"p5\" id=\"h-the-chemistry-behind-stars-colours\"><strong>The chemistry behind stars&#8217; colours<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/12\/14.OrionNebula_BenBrotherton-aa9ba79.jpg\" alt=\"The Orion Nebula. Credit: Ben Brotherton, Herefordshire, 2 November 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">A pair of binoculars or a telescope can reveal even more colour in the night sky.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Sticking with Orion, a small telescope shows the fuzzy \u2018star\u2019 in the middle of his sword is not a star at all, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/the-orion-nebula-m42\/\">Orion Nebula<\/a>, a region where new stars are being born.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Here the gas is being lit up by radiation from the young, newly formed stars, transferring energy to the atoms in the gas and \u2018exciting\u2019 them.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Due to the different atomic structures of the elements in the Orion Nebula, we see different colours when we look at it through a telescope, including pinky-red from hydrogen and green from oxygen.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">In fact, every element in the periodic table will emit a unique pattern of colours when excited, and this is the element\u2019s spectrum.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"531\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/03\/MAIN_6-2a01628.jpg\" alt=\"Splitting starlight into its colours - like a prism splittig white light - is called spectroscopy.
