{"id":53399,"date":"2024-01-10T09:50:32","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T09:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/be696b66-d8a7-45ca-b5e4-6e69659657f7"},"modified":"2024-01-10T10:32:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T10:32:32","slug":"the-reason-why-planets-are-round-explained","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/the-reason-why-planets-are-round-explained\/","title":{"rendered":"The reason why planets are round explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Most planets and other bodies in the Solar System are nearly perfectly spherical, but why? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Maggie Aderin-Pocock\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 10 January 2024 at 09:50 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p class=\"p1\">From the major planets in our Solar System to the very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-disc\/\">Sun<\/a> itself, the sphere is the most common shape of celestial bodies, but why are the planets round?<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The short answer as to why the planets are around is simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-gravity-facts-about-force\/\">gravity<\/a>!<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Gravity is the main force that sculpts the Universe, causing the formation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/planets-solar-system-guide\/\">planets<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\/\">stars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\/\">galaxies<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It works over great distances and has no preferred orientation.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Gravity draws matter in from all directions, which clumps together and forms a round shape that looks the same from all directions. The shape that meets all these criteria is a sphere.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Why are planets like our own Earth round? The simple answer is gravity. Credit: NASA\/Toby Ord<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>Planets are not perfectly round<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">Gravity may be the reason why planets are round, but it also distorts the sphere we would expect to see, so most of the bodies we think of as being round are really &#8216;almost spherical&#8217;.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Take our planet for instance. If I was to travel all around the world from pole to pole, I would have covered a distance of around 39,941km.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If I were to do the same journey, but this time around the equator, I would have travelled an additional 130km.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The Earth bulges at the equator to form a shape close to an oblate spheroid \u2013 a slightly squashed sphere.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-why-planets-are-squashed\"><strong>Why planets are squashed<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1161778915-d6da8c8-e1647608441615.jpg\" alt=\"The centrifugal force of a chairoplane is a simple way of understanding how a planet's spin causes it to bulge, so it's not perfectly round. Credit: Andrew Williams \/ EyeEm \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The reason why planets get a bit fat around the middle is due to their rotation about their axes.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Imagine the chairoplane: that fairground ride with lots of chairs hanging down from a central disc.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As the disc starts to rotate, the chairs lift and move outward from the centre or outward from the centre of rotation.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The only thing stopping the chairs from flying off is the chains.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The same thing happens to a planet when it spins. Gravity pulls everything inwards, but the speed of the rotation pushes everything outwards.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Just like the chairs on the ride moving outward, as a plane rotates on its axis it grows wider around the middle.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How does spinning change the shape of planets?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2MFsOO8gu3Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p class=\"p2\">How fast a planet rotates seems to be one of the largest influences on the size of the bulge.<\/p><ul><li class=\"p2\"><strong>Earth<\/strong>, with its 24-hour rotation, has a bulge of about 0.3%<\/li><li class=\"p2\">One rotation of <strong>Jupiter<\/strong> takes 10 hours and it has a bulge of 0.7%<\/li><li class=\"p2\"><strong>Venus<\/strong>, which takes 243 Earth days to complete a single rotation, has no discernible bulge at all<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p3\">But what of something much larger? Do stars bulge as well?<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"853\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/12\/07.SunSpots_ArturoBuenrostro-22199b4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102788\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Arturo Buenrostro<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>Stars&#8217; spin and bulge<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">Data from NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solar Dynamics Observatory<\/a> (SDO) revealed that even though the Sun rotates a rapid 7,000km\/h at its equator, measurements of its bulge find its smaller than expected \u2013 virtually negligible in fact.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Is this normal for stars? The SDO only recently made the measurements of the Sun.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Our star\u2019s brightness and turbulent surface make defining its edge hard work.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1280\" height=\"883\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/08\/heic0807c-2b5403e.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51990\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The stars of the Summer Triangle asterism: Vega (top left), Altair (below middle) and Deneb (far left). Fujii<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Doing this for another star has proved to be more challenging still, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/altair\/\">Altair<\/a> in Aquila, which rotates at an even faster 17,000km\/h, has been measured and found to have a bulge.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">So why does our Sun not bulge as it spin?
