Find out when it&#8217;s happening, where to see it and how to view online. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jamie Carter\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 15 January 2024 at 14:38 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>One of the biggest astronomical events this year is the total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\/\">solar eclipse<\/a> that&#8217;s coming to North America on April 8 2024.<\/p><p>Beginning in Mexico and passing across the US and Atlantic Canada, it\u2019s estimated that 32 million people live inside the path of totality for the 2024 total solar eclipse.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to safely view a solar eclipse\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XaPEkdsdUsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>That\u2019s 20 million more than in 2017 during the last total solar eclipse in the US, which went coast to coast.<\/p><p>This time it\u2019s also much longer, with totality peaking at 4 minutes and 27 seconds. It comes less than six months after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/october-14-annular-solar-eclipse\">October 14 \u2018ring of fire\u2019 annular solar eclipse<\/a> in the US, Central and South America.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-what-is-a-total-solar-eclipse\"><strong>What is a total solar eclipse?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Baily\u2019s beads or diamond rings occur in the moments just befrore and after totality, where the Moon&#8217;s rugged landscape of mountains and valley&#8217;s let the Sun peak past in some places, but not in others. Credit: John Finney Photography \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon\u2019s apparent size in the sky is exactly right to completely cover the Sun\u2019s disk, making it possible to glimpse the solar corona around the Moon\u2019s silhouette for a few minutes.<\/p><p>This is called totality, during which the sky turns a deep twilight.<\/p><p>On either side of totality, it\u2019s possible to see phenomena such as Baily\u2019s beads and diamond rings as the last and first drops of sunlight are visible.<\/p><h2 id=\"h-april-8-2024-solar-eclipse-dates-and-times\"><strong>April 8 2024 solar eclipse dates and times<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"782\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/06\/Total-solar-eclipse-2024-4b8a16f-e1690360515634.png\" alt=\"Map of totality for the April 8 2024 eclipse. Credit: Ian McDonnell\/Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-how-to-observe-an-eclipse-safely\"><strong>How to observe an eclipse safely<\/strong><\/h2><p>You should never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection (in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-eclipse-glasses\/\">eclipse glasses<\/a> and solar filters) and some phases of this solar eclipse will be too dangerous to look at with the naked eye.<\/p><p>Everyone across North America will need to wear eclipse glasses or use solar filters to safely view all or parts of this event.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/04\/GettyImages-1483461238-4799b87.jpg\" alt=\"Eclipse chasers in Surabaya , Indonesia observe a hybrid solar eclipse wearing solar eclipse glasses on 20 April 2023. Photo by Robertus Pudyanto\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>For those outside the path of totality, eclipse glasses will be required for the entire event.<\/p><p>For those inside the path of totality, the few minutes of totality is perfectly safe to look at with the naked eye (that is the attraction of the event), but it\u2019s preceded and followed by a long partial solar eclipse that requires eclipse glasses, so you should always observe with caution.<\/p><p>As is always the case with any form of solar observing, if you are not sure what you&#8217;re doing, don&#8217;t attempt it.<\/p><p>A safer way is to observe the eclipse indirectly, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/make-a-solar-projection-screen\/\">making a solar projection screen<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"878\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-57206006-d157f73-e1610550192577.jpg\" alt=\"The projections of a partial solar eclipse in New Delhi, India, 29 March 2006.
