It was the first force to be recognised and described, yet it is the least understood.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It is a force that keeps your feet on the ground, yet no such force actually exists.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Gravity, to borrow the words of Winston Churchill, is \u201ca riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma\u201d.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Any way you look at it, gravity seems bonkers \u2013 are these its oddest quirks?<\/p><h2><strong>12 facts about gravity<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"p1\"><strong>Newton never mentioned an apple falling until 40 years after his discovery of the law of gravity<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The falling apple is now a symbol of Newton&#8217;s ideas about gravity. His key insight was that the apple and the Moon both fall under gravity (the Moon, because of its sideways velocity, never gets any closer).<\/p><p class=\"p3\">By comparing their rates of fall, he deduced the inverse-square law \u2013 that the force between bodies is four times as weak when they are twice as far apart, and so on.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But the first time Newton told the story of the apple was to his biographer, William Stukeley, four decades after discovering the law of gravity.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Perhaps, with his creative days behind him, he was concocting his own legend.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Certainly, the story depicts Newton as the lone genius struck by a flash of inspiration.<\/p><h3 class=\"p3\"><strong>Gravity keeps your feet on the ground yet no such \u2018force\u2019 actually exists<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-1407222973-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Gravity keeps your feet on the ground, but it's not a force that pulls you down to Earth. Credit: Catherine McQueen<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Although Newton imagined the force of gravity between the Sun and Earth as like a piece of invisible elastic connecting the bodies, Einstein discovered the truth is different.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A mass like the Sun warps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-spacetime\/\">spacetime<\/a> around it, creating a valley.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">We can\u2019t see the valley because spacetime is a four-dimensional thing and we are three-dimensional beings.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But Earth circles around the valley like a ball around a roulette wheel. It experiences no \u2018force\u2019 but travels along the shortest path through warped spacetime.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Similarly, there is a tendency for you to fall to the bottom of the valley of spacetime around Earth.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The surface obstructs, however. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Orbiting at an altitude of 400km above Earth, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/international-space-station-facts-history\/\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS) is so close to our planet that gravity barely differs from what is experienced on the ground.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Astronauts are weightless for the same reason as someone unfortunate enough to be in a lift after its cable has snapped \u2013 because, as fast as they fall towards the lift floor, the lift floor falls away from them.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It is not obvious that the ISS is falling. That is because it has sideways motion.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This means that, as fast as gravity curves its path down towards the Earth\u2019s surface, the Earth\u2019s surface curves away from it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">ISS therefore falls forever in a circle, never reaching the ground.<\/p><h3 class=\"p3\"><strong>When the tide at sea rises, the water in wells falls, and vice versa<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-692276418-1024x820.jpg?fit=800%2C641\" alt=\"When the tide at sea rises, the water in wells falls, and vice versa. Credit: Arsenio Marrero \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">This is something known since around 100 BC and explained only in 1940.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The Greek philosopher Poseidonios, who lived between 135 and 51 BC, discovered this effect.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">He noticed that, when a spring at the temple of Heracleium in modern-day Cadiz in Spain was low, the tide in the nearby Atlantic was high, and vice versa.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The explanation is that the gravity of the Moon, the principal cause of the tides, not only makes the ocean bulge upwards but it does so to the rock as well.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The waterlogged rock in which a well sits is like a wet sponge.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It sucks water out of the well when the sponge is stretched upwards (high tide) and squeezes water back into the well when the sponge is released (low tide).<\/p><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>Everyone thinks gravity sucks, but in most of the Universe it blows<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1427997799-1024x576.jpg?fit=800%2C450\" alt=\"Dark energy is accelerating the expansion of the Universe. Credit: Ploystock \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Children at school are still taught that gravity is a force of attraction.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">However, in 1998, astronomers discovered to their immense surprise that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/expansion-universe\/\">expansion of the Universe<\/a> is speeding up, and they have attributed this to the repulsive gravity of mysterious \u2018dark energy\u2019, invisible stuff filling all of space.<\/p><p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-dark-energy-how-astronomers-trying-find\">Dark energy<\/a> accounts for more than two-thirds of the mass-energy of the Universe.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Nobody knows what it is. In fact our very best theory (quantum theory) predicts an energy for the vacuum of space (dark energy) \u2013 that is one followed by 120 zeroes bigger than what is observed.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This is the biggest discrepancy between a prediction and an observation in the history of science. Something is wrong!<\/p><h3 class=\"p3\"><strong>Squeezed and stretched by gravity, the body in the Solar System that generates heat most efficiently is Jupiter\u2019s moon Io<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/07\/io-eruption-262f4b7-e1663228053822.jpg\" alt=\"Jupiter's moon Io is the most active volcanic body in the Solar System. Credit: NASA\/JPL\/USGS<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">On 8 March 1979, NASA\u2019s Voyager 1 space probe, having streaked through the Jupiter system faster than a speeding bullet, turned its camera back the way it had come.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Navigation engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/volcano-jupiter-moon-io-interview-voyager-linda-morabito\/\">Linda Morabito<\/a> became the first person to see, silhouetted against the black of space, the super-volcanoes (strictly speaking, geysers) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/io-jupiter-volcanic-moon\">moon Io<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The most geologically active body in the Solar System is heated by nearby moons Europa and Ganymede, and Jupiter.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The moons tug its orbit into an elongated ellipse. As it moves close to and far away from Jupiter, the gravitational stretching effect of the giant planet changes.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Io is heated for exactly the reason a squash ball gets hot when squeezed repeatedly in your hand.<\/p><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>If gravity had not \u2018switched on\u2019 after the Big Bang, time might not flow forwards<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/05\/GettyImages-1395723783-90efb71.jpg\" alt=\"If gravity had not \u2018switched on\u2019 after the Big Bang, time might not flow forwards\" class=\"wp-image-118649\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Tetra Images \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The direction of time is associated with order changing to disorder \u2013 the direction in which castles crumble, eggs break and so on.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Ultimately, therefore, the \u2018arrow of time\u2019 must be due to the Big Bang being in a highly ordered state, which is very unlikely.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Actually, early on, when matter from the Big Bang fireball was smeared smoothly across space, the Universe was disordered.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">However, when the Universe was 380,000 years old, gravity was able to gather matter together for the first time.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">In a gravitating system, clumped is the most likely state.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The smeared-out Universe was therefore suddenly thrown into a very unlikely state \u2013 precisely the requirement to create our forward direction of time.<\/p><h3 class=\"p3\"><strong>A gravitational wave detected on 15 September 2015 came from merging black holes that emitted 50 times the power of all the stars in the Universe<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/03\/black-holes-colliding-gravitational-waves-7f7c970.jpg\" alt=\"The collision of two black holes produces ripples in spacetime known as 'gravitational waves'. Credit: Mark Garlick \/ Science Photo Library \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">In a galaxy far, far away, at a time when Earth boasted nothing more complex than a bacterium, two monster black holes were locked in a death spiral.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">One was 29 times the mass of the Sun, the other 36 times the mass of the Sun.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Each travelling at half the speed of light, they whirled about each other one last time.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">As they coalesced, three whole solar masses were destroyed and converted into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/what-are-gravitational-waves\">gravitational waves<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Bear in mind that an atomic bomb converts only about a kilogram of mass-energy into other forms.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Had the tsunami of tortured space-time that surged outwards been in the form of light, it would have shone tens of times brighter than a Universe of stars.<\/p><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>Without Einstein\u2019s theories your mobile phone could not pinpoint your location<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-1306359673-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Without Einstein\u2019s theories your mobile phone could not pinpoint your location. Credit: Oscar Wong \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The satellites of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/how-global-positioning-system-gps-changed-world\/\">Global Positioning System<\/a>, on which smartphones and satnav rely to determine location, move in highly elongated elliptical orbits around Earth.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">When each swings in to its closest point to the planet, it experiences stronger gravity and its on-board clock slows down; when it recedes to its farthest point from the planet, the clock speeds up.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This is according to Einstein\u2019s general theory of relativity. However, an effect of Einstein\u2019s special theory of relativity causes the clocks to slow down when they are moving fastest.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Both of these effects must be taken into consideration by the software that, unbeknownst to you, calculates your exact location on the Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p><h3 class=\"p3\"><strong>Gravity causes the 27km ring of the Large Hadron Collider to shrink and expand by 1mm twice a day<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2017\/06\/CERN_LHC_Tunnel1-152c4d0.jpg\" alt=\"The Large Hadron Collider: the world's largest, most powerful particle accelerator Credit: CERN\" class=\"wp-image-25038\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Large Hadron Collider: the world&#8217;s largest, most powerful particle acceleratorCredit: CERN<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">In 1992, physicists working on the Large Electron-Positron (LEP) Collider near Geneva, whose subterranean tunnel loop now contains the Large Hadron Collider, noticed something odd.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Twice a day they had to boost the energy of their circulating electrons and positrons (\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/antimatter\/\">antimatter<\/a>\u2019 partners of electrons) to keep them in the ring.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">After scratching their heads, they realised that tides happen twice a day.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">What was happening was that the gravity of the Moon was causing the rock of the Jura Mountains, into which LEP was bored, to bulge upwards.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This increased its length so that the magnets were no longer the right strength to trap the beam within the tunnel.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Surely one of the most esoteric effect of the tides there is!<\/p><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>You age more quickly on the top floor of a building than on the bottom floor<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/GettyImages-1329284965-1024x691.jpg?fit=800%2C540\" alt=\"You age more quickly on the top floor of a building than on the bottom floor. Credit: Shunli Zhao \/ Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-145699\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Shunli Zhao \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">According to Einstein\u2019s theory of gravity, the general theory of relativity, time flows more slowly in stronger gravity.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">On the top floor of building, you are farther from the mass of Earth than at the bottom, so gravity is marginally weaker and you age more quickly \u2013 so if you want to live longer, should you find yourself a bungalow?<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It is a fantastically small effect and you would need the most sensitive atomic clocks to show it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Remarkably, however, in 2010 physicists at the National Institute of Standards Technology in the US demonstrated, with the aid of two atomic clocks, that a person standing on one step of a staircase ages more slowly than someone standing on the step above.<\/p><h2 class=\"p3\"><strong>Only by understanding gravity will we be able to answer where the Universe came from<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/mysteries-universe-4e3dc50.jpg\" alt=\"mysteries universe cosmic question mark\" class=\"wp-image-106921\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: noao\/aura\/nsf\/hubble heritage team<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The twin pillars of modern physics are Einstein\u2019s theory of gravity, which describes galaxies and the Universe, and quantum theory, which describes atoms and their constituents.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It has given us lasers, computers and nuclear reactors; it explains why the Sun shines and why the ground is solid.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Einstein\u2019s theory (which describes the large) and quantum theory (which describes the small) reign supreme in their own domains but have resisted merging.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This would not be a problem; however, once up on a time \u2013 in the Big Bang \u2013 the Universe was very small.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">To understand how the Universe emerged from this, like a rabbit from a hat, we must therefore unite Einstein\u2019s theory with quantum theory: to create a quantum theory of gravity.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>This article originally appeared in the June 2017 issue of <\/strong><\/em><strong>BBC Sky at Night Magazine<\/strong><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a force we feel the effects of every day, but it\u2019s also the most enigmatic.
