Credit: ESO\/VMC Survey<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 id=\"h-how-to-spot-a-planetary-disc-around-a-star\"><strong>How to spot a planetary disc around a star<\/strong><\/h2><p>Such discs form from the gas and dust surrounding growing stars. As this matter can\u2019t fall onto the star directly, it instead flattens out to form a rotating disc.<\/p><p>Parts of the disc closer to the star rotate faster than those further out.<\/p><p>If astronomers spot this unique velocity pattern around a star, they know they\u2019ve found an accretion disc.<\/p><p>Fortunately, a trick of physics shifts light from objects moving towards an observer into bluer colours, while that moving away becomes redder.<\/p><p>The faster the object is moving, the bigger the shift.<\/p><p>Using the Atacama Large Millimeter\/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), McLeod\u2019s team was able to measure the velocity of the disc and found it looked exactly like an accretion disc.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/HH1177-1024x717.jpg?fit=800%2C560\" alt=\"Artist\u2019s impression of HH1177 and (inset) the red- and blueshifted jets seen shooting from the fledgling star disc. Kornmesser, ESO\/A McLeod et al.<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2><strong>Evidence for planets in another galaxy?<\/strong><\/h2><p>We know from similar discs seen here in our Milky Way that they often go on to form planetary systems.<\/p><p>However, those around large stars such as HH1177 are usually surrounded by clouds of obscuring dust.<\/p><p>But material within the Large Magellanic Cloud is fundamentally different to that of the Milky Way, leading to a lower dust density around H1177, allowing astronomers to see the growing system.<\/p><p>&#8220;We know discs are vital to forming stars and planets in our Galaxy, and here, for the first time, we\u2019re seeing direct evidence for this in another galaxy,&#8221; says McLeod.<\/p><p>&#8220;Being able to study how stars form at such incredible distances and in a different galaxy is very exciting.&#8221;<\/p><h2><strong>Key takeaways<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/04\/Exoplanets-3f55c96.jpg\" alt=\"While we don't know for sure yet, the discovery hints that planet formation may be as common in other galaxies as it is in our own. De La Torre<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The relative lack of heavy metals in the Large Magellanic Cloud makes the presence of such a large disc a surprise.<\/p><p>Though the data is fuzzy, in our own Galaxy planets are more common in stellar systems formed from gas with more carbon, oxygen and so on \u2013 the ingredients for planet formation.<\/p><p>So we might have expected the LMC to be relatively devoid of planets, but there they are.<\/p><p>Of course this is just one system.
