{"id":54753,"date":"2024-02-10T09:23:30","date_gmt":"2024-02-10T09:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4d8f45e3-5c63-44d2-8c90-1891ceb26034"},"modified":"2024-02-10T09:34:01","modified_gmt":"2024-02-10T09:34:01","slug":"a-history-of-music-in-space","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/a-history-of-music-in-space\/","title":{"rendered":"A history of music in space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">A look at the music that humanity has sent into space. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jon Powell\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Saturday, 10 February 2024 at 09:23 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>As the needle touches down on a vinyl record, so has music itself touched down on other worlds beyond Earth.<\/p><p>Whether the melodies have been transmitted from Earth\u2019s surface or launched aboard spacecraft into space, it can be said that music has twinkled the stars.<\/p><p>Radio signals have been leaving our planet for years, and even now, someone, somewhere, may be playing the PopMaster quiz on a distant world \u2013 and still getting it wrong.<\/p><p>It\u2019s a comforting thought to consider that vastly superior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/extra-terrestrial-life-might-not-seem-so-alien\">alien life<\/a> may not be able to name that Number One hit from the 1980s.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Thomas Pesquet plays saxophone in the Cupola module on the International Space Station, 31 May 2017. Credit: ESA\/NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-music-in-the-apollo-era\"><strong>Music in the Apollo era<\/strong><\/h2><p>The crew of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/the-story-of-apollo-10\">Apollo 10<\/a> managed to make their own \u2018music\u2019 in space.<\/p><p>As the astronauts rounded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/moon-far-side\">far side<\/a> of the Moon in 1969, they reported whistling sounds to NASA officials back on Earth.<\/p><p>These notes turned out to be the result of crossed wires in the communication system between the lunar module and the command module.<\/p><p>However, in a test-run for Apollo 11\u2019s actual playing of the track on the lunar surface later, Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u2018Fly Me to the Moon\u2019 made its first trek with Apollo 10.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fly Me To The Moon (2008 Remastered)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZEcqHA7dbwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Aside from Ol\u2019 Blue Eyes, the Apollo 11 crew had other music on mixtapes to accompany them on their lunar trip.<\/p><p>Among Neil Armstrong\u2019s collection of favourite tunes were tracks from Les Baxter\u2019s 1947 album <em>Music Out of the Moon<\/em>, along with other 20th-century favourites such as Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand and Glen Campbell.\u00a0<\/p><p>This tradition continues today, but rather than transporting music, astronauts are woken up by it.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Music in the modern Space Age<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elton John Wake Up Song and Greeting for STS-135\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/boTpJ16GJaM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The crew aboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/international-space-station-facts-history\">International Space Station<\/a> receive \u2018wake-up music\u2019 from Mission Control, as did astronauts aboard the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/history-nasa-space-shuttle\">Space Shuttle<\/a>.<\/p><p>Back in 1988, the crew of the Soviet Soyuz TM-7 mission took with them Pink Floyd\u2019s just-released live album, <em>Delicate Sound of Thunder<\/em>, which band member David Gilmour claimed was the first rock music recording to make it into space.<\/p><p>However, that claim was duly challenged, with the prize having already gone to some of the cassette tapes carried on board Apollo 15.<\/p><p>We\u2019ve also managed to have music beamed back at Earth, intentionally that is, courtesy of NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/curiosity-rover-mars\">Curiosity Mars rover<\/a>.<\/p><p>The track \u2018Reach for the Stars\u2019 was especially penned by will.i.am to be transmitted back from the surface of the Red Planet.<\/p><p>In 2012, travelling a whopping 480 million kilometres to reach our ears, Reach for the Stars was the first tune to be broadcast from another planet.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Students Reach for the Stars with will.i.am\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8UaSl_pRSYI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Beagle 2, which made it to Mars in 2003 but couldn\u2019t communicate once it landed, was due to play a Blur track, but sadly that wasn\u2019t to be.<\/p><p>As records go (pun definitely intended), the most distant music sent by humankind into space is etched on a pair of gold-plated copper discs, carried on board Voyagers 1 and 2.<\/p><p>Along with Chuck Berry, the Voyager discs boast classical music in the shape of J.S. Bach and Mozart, a blast on the bagpipes and all sorts of different music to reflect the diversity of cultures around the globe.<\/p><p>So far, our music request to the stars has gone unanswered.
