{"id":55329,"date":"2024-02-29T09:55:24","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T09:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/527cc9dd-78a4-4fc4-a7da-fdbbd53087b7"},"modified":"2024-02-29T10:32:33","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T10:32:33","slug":"if-dark-matter-is-everywhere-why-do-some-galaxies-seem-to-contain-none-at-all","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/if-dark-matter-is-everywhere-why-do-some-galaxies-seem-to-contain-none-at-all\/","title":{"rendered":"If dark matter is everywhere, why do some galaxies seem to contain none at all?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">What does it mean to find a galaxy without dark matter, or with very little of it? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Anita Chandran\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 29 February 2024 at 09:55 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Next time you&#8217;re looking at a beautiful image of multiple stars and galaxies like those captured by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/hubble-space-telescope-facts-history\/\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, or staring in awe at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/james-webb-space-telescope-images\/\">latest James Webb Space Telescope images<\/a>, consider this:<\/p><p>All the &#8216;normal&#8217;, visible matter we can see in the Universe &#8211; planets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\/\">stars<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\/\">galaxies<\/a> etc. &#8211; accounts for just 5% of its total content.<\/p><p>The rest is composed of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-dark-energy-how-astronomers-trying-find\/\">dark energy<\/a> &#8211; the name given to the force that appears to be accelerating the rate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/expansion-universe\/\">expansion of the Universe<\/a> &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/what-is-dark-matter\/\">dark matter<\/a> &#8211; which is known to exist, but which cannot be observed directly.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hubble Space Telescope image of diffuse galaxy NGC 1052-DF2, a galaxy that&#8217;s missing most, if not all, of its dark matter. Credit: NASA, ESA, and P. van Dokkum (Yale University)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>So the question is this: if dark matter accounts for a vast amount of the known matter in our Universe, why do some galaxies appear to contain almost none of it?<\/p><p>What does it mean to find a galaxy without dark matter, or with very little of it?<\/p><p>This is the question asked by <a href=\"https:\/\/pavel-mancera-pina.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pavel Mancera Pi\u00f1a<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universiteitleiden.nl\/en\/science\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leiden Observatory<\/a> in the Netherlands, who specialises in in dark matter.<\/p><p>We spoke to Pi\u00f1a to find out more.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"971\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/04\/Pavel-Mancera-Pina-0120a2a.jpg\" alt=\"Pavel Mancera Pi\u00f1a, a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands, who specialises in in dark matter.\" class=\"wp-image-118319\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-what-is-dark-matter-and-why-is-it-called-dark\"><b><strong>What is dark matter and why is it called \u2018dark\u2019?<\/strong><\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">We have evidence suggesting that there should be a certain amount of mass in the Universe, but this mass cannot be observed directly.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Even in early works from the 1920s, astronomers knew that in order to explain how fast some galaxies move there needed to be more mass than we could account for.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">An astronomer called Fritz Zwicky came up with the name \u2018dark matter\u2019, but essentially the name only reflects that we don\u2019t really know what it is.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-what-might-dark-matter-be-made-of\"><b>What might dark matter be made of?<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">Most of the community \u2013 not all \u2013 believes that dark matter is made of particles that don\u2019t interact with electromagnetic radiation, instead only interacting with normal matter through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-gravity-facts-about-force\/\">gravity<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Essentially, it doesn\u2019t absorb or emit light (and heat). We can only infer that it\u2019s there due to gravitational effects.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The problem is that although we have built experiments like the Large Hadron Collider, we haven\u2019t been able to detect dark matter particles, so we don\u2019t know what their exact properties are.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/03\/Bullet-b78c4c6.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy cluster 1E 0657-56, known as the Bullet Cluster. Credit: NASA\/CXC\/CfA\/M.Markevitch et al<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-how-do-you-look-for-dark-matter\"><b><strong>How do you look for dark matter?<\/strong><\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">By looking at how fast galaxies rotate. We know the rotation of a galaxy is a consequence of its total mass, so if we can observe how fast a galaxy rotates, then we know its total mass.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">We can compare the total mass measured from how fast the galaxy rotates with the mass of stars and gas [in the galaxy], which we can observe directly from telescopes.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">We can then look at the mismatch between the two to infer how much dark matter there is in the galaxy.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">There is typically a very strong mismatch, suggesting that there is a lot of mass that we don\u2019t see.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\" id=\"h-what-do-your-investigations-show\"><b><strong>What do your investigations show?<\/strong><\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p2\">Our team was looking at a galaxy that was very peculiar because it\u2019s classified as an \u2018ultra-diffuse\u2019 galaxy.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">These galaxies are a bit weird because the distribution of light within them is similar to big spiral galaxies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/andromeda-galaxy\/\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a> or the Milky Way.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">But they have about 1,000 times less stellar mass than big galaxies.Some people say they have the mass of dwarf galaxies, but the size of giants.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">We observed the motion of gas in one of these galaxies using the Very Large Array, a set of antennae in New Mexico, to obtain very sharp images.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">We measured how fast the gas is rotating in this galaxy. And then we tried to see how much dark matter there was.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Usually, when you look at small galaxies, you find that most of the mass is dark matter. Perhaps 90%, maybe 80%.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">We found instead that there was a very small contribution from dark matter in this galaxy.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In fact, if you take the numbers, you could argue that you don\u2019t need dark matter to explain how fast the galaxy is rotating.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"738\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/05\/09.potw2217a-be57476-e1682418088576.jpg\" alt=\"Ultra-diffuse galaxy GAMA 526784, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.
