Could they really exist? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Marcus Chown\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 06 March 2024 at 08:53 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p class=\"p5\">A white hole is a time-reversed black hole \u2013 a region of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-spacetime\">spacetime<\/a> where matter spontaneously appears and explodes outwards, rather than implodes and disappears as with a black hole.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">White holes are the opposite of black holes, in that they spit out light and matter, rather than trapping it.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">So far, white holes are purely hypothetical objects, but astronomers are contemplating how they could form in reality.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">No light can escape a black hole, but it can be bent around it. Falcke, Radboud University<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p6\" id=\"h-white-hole-as-the-end-point-of-a-black-hole\"><strong>White hole as the end point of a black hole<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p6\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black hole<\/a> forms when a massive star at the end of its life shrinks catastrophically under its own gravity down to an infinitesimally small point, or singularity.<\/p><p class=\"p6\">All that is left behind from the stellar collapse is a grossly warped region of space, so where does the star\u2019s matter actually go?<\/p><p class=\"p6\">One possibility is that it explodes into another universe as a white hole.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1481\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/05\/White-hole-446829e-scaled-e1588669809182.jpg\" alt=\"An artist's impression of a wormhole. Garlick\/Wikipedia Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p6\">The white hole has to be in another universe, because the defining characteristic of a black hole is that the event horizon, which hides the singularity from view, is one-way.<\/p><p class=\"p6\">In other words, things that fall through it can never emerge again in our Universe.<\/p><p class=\"p6\">For matter to pass between universes, the black hole and white hole must be connected by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/wormholes\">wormhole<\/a> \u2013 a tunnel through spacetime.<\/p><p class=\"p6\">Some scientists suggest super-energetic objects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/quasars\/\">quasars<\/a> are white holes, and perhaps even the Big Bang was a gigantic version.<\/p><p><strong><em>Do you think white holes and worm holes could exist?
