It&#8217;s the only planet known to support life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Our average star the Sun has a unique selling point: it is the only star we know of to host a planet that has life on its surface. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Maggie Aderin-Pocock\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 06 March 2024 at 09:40 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p class=\"p3\">Earth is the only planet we know to support life, which is quite remarkable when you think of Earth&#8217;s place on a grand scale.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">On many scales the Sun can be seen as quite average: about average size, about average brightness.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Even in the terms of categorisation it falls into the band in which the majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\/\">stars<\/a> sit, called the main sequence.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">So does it have a unique selling point? Well, to date the only unique feature we\u2019ve confirmed about the Sun but have not yet found elsewhere is the fact that one of its planets has life on it.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Earth is the only planet we know of to support life. Credit: NASA \/ Toby Ord<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The search for signs of life beyond our Solar System is still in its infancy. To date just over 5,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\/\">exoplanets<\/a> have been discovered, and that number is likely to greatly increase over the next few years.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The holy grail would be to find Earth-sized planets that sit in their stars\u2019 habitable zone, also known as the Goldilocks Zone since it is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-makes-a-planet-habitable\/\">what makes a planet habitable<\/a>? If we are looking for signs of life, a planet with liquid water on it seems like a good place to start.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But, if we find what we are looking for out there (and we do have some very good candidates), how can we detect signs of life?<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-analysing-starlight-to-detect-signs-of-life\"><strong>Analysing starlight to detect signs of life<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/01\/transiting_exoplanet-dd5a1fe-e1615386399790.png\" alt=\"An illustration of an exoplanet transiting its host star. How can we hope to find life beyond our Solar System, when exoplanets are so far away?<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Biological activity as we know it creates a distinct chemical signature in a planet\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">So by analysing the spectrum of that atmosphere, the chemical composition and possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/biosignatures-exoplanets\/\">biosignature<\/a> fingerprint could give us a strong indication of whether life is out there.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But therein lies the challenge: to detect exoplanets we use a range of techniques, and one of the more popular is to detect a drop in a star\u2019s brightness as an exoplanet transits across it.<\/p><p>This is known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets-transit-method\">transit method of exoplanet detection<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">These light drops can be very small, but we have instruments sophisticated enough to detect them.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/04\/Light-Curve_0-02c74ec.jpg\" alt=\"A NASA diagram showing the light curve of a planet passing in front of a star. This is the transit method Credit: NASA Ames<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Astronomers can even study starlight passing though the thin band of atmosphere around an exoplanet, so it can be analysed for its chemical signature.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Astronomers are wily creatures and realised that if you analysed a star\u2019s spectrum with and without a planet in transit, you could get a strong indication of the chemical content of the exoplanet\u2019s atmosphere and search for those biomarkers indicating life.<\/p><p>I&#8217;m looking forward to the era of the Extremely Large Telescope, which will be a game-changer.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/08\/e-elt-telescope-fa4ca6f.jpg\" alt=\"Artist's impression of the European Extremely Large Telescope in operation.
