Could gravity be to blame? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Chris Lintott\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 15 March 2024 at 12:43 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p class=\"p1\">The notion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/chicxulub-asteroid-killed-dinosaurs\/\">asteroid that killed the dinosaurs<\/a> is widely accepted, but could there be a different explanation involving gravity and the expansion of the Universe?<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Professor Leandros Perivolaropoulos of the University of Ioannina in Greece is clearly not someone who shirks from a challenge.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In a flurry of papers released in 2021, he suggests a solution to one of the biggest problems in modern cosmology.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Now he thinks that the same explanation may account for why the dinosaurs died when they did. Not bad for a year\u2019s work.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Let me explain.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The cosmological problem Perivolaropoulous addresses concerns the speed of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/expansion-universe\/\">expansion of the Universe<\/a>, most often expressed as a number called the Hubble Constant.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Hubble Constant is a measurement of the speed of the expansion of the Universe. Credit: Andreus \/ iStock \/ Getty Images Plus<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-hubble-constant-explained\"><strong>Hubble Constant explained<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">The Hubble Constant measures the current speed of expansion of the Universe and there are two main methods of measuring it:<\/p><p class=\"p3\">We can look around us, using so-called \u2018standard candles\u2019 such as Type 1a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/when-stars-collapse-what-is-a-supernova\/\">supernovae<\/a> to measure it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">We can look at the early Universe, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-cosmic-microwave-background\/\">Cosmic Microwave Background<\/a>, and extrapolate to the present day.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">In recent years, these two methods have both improved in accuracy, but they disagree with one another, causing something of a crisis.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/04\/Planck_CMB-07a1b86-e1597141466232.jpg\" alt=\"A snapshot of the Cosmic Microwave Background - heat left over from the Big Bang - when the Universe was just 380,000 years old, as seen by the Planck Telescope. Credit: ESA and the Planck Collaboration<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The world isn\u2019t short of suggestions for how to fix the problem, ranging from possible errors in the complex analysis carried out in each case, to exotic new theories of cosmology.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Perivolaropoulos is in the second camp, as he suggests that the observations can be reconciled with each other by a recent change in the strength of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-gravity-facts-about-force\/\">gravity<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">\u2018All\u2019 that has to happen is for gravity to have become about 10% stronger sometime in the recent past.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Such a change would alter the properties of all the objects, such as supernovae, we observe and thus allow cosmologists to resolve their disagreements.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">A change within the last 150 million years would do nicely.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"833\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-1301755112-abc3847-e1652257654777.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108365\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> It\u2019s widely accepted that a huge asteroid strike probably killed the dinosaurs. Credit: Mark Garlick \/ Science Photo Library<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\"><strong>So where do gravity and the dinosaurs come in?<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">Which brings us to the dinosaurs. You can\u2019t change gravity without having an effect on the orbit of Earth and pretty much everything else.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Earth would have got hotter, something Perivolaropoulos claims, unconvincingly, to see reflected in the temperature records.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">On the outskirts of the Solar System, the odds of objects in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/what-is-the-oort-cloud\/\">Oort Cloud<\/a> \u2013 the major reservoir of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-comets\/\">comets<\/a> \u2013 being slung into the inner Solar System increase as gravity does.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">More incoming comets means more impacts like the one that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">If the transition in gravity hadn\u2019t happened, giant lizards may have continued to walk on Earth.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1074\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/07\/GettyImages-1248929382-0403ee4-e1652257689771.jpg\" alt=\"An artist's illustration of the Oort Cloud. Credit: Naeblys \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Now, I don\u2019t believe Perivolaropoulos\u2019s theory.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It seems too much of a coincidence to have such a dramatic change in physics happen just before we appeared with our telescopes and equations to study it.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">I also don\u2019t think adding several more layers of speculation to explain the geological record helps much.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Fun though it is to speculate, if you want me to believe in changing gravity then put dinosaurs aside and explain why such a change could only have happened recently.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Or work out if the strength of gravity could be always changing instead of requiring one sudden move.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Or just work out a way to test the ideas directly.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Until then, thinking about what happened to the dinosaurs is strictly for the birds.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><strong><em>Chris Lintott was reading <\/em>Is the Hubble crisis connected with the extinction of dinosaurs? <em>by Leandros Perivolaropoulos.
