Why are the best galaxies to be seen in spring?<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s all to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/how-does-earth-orbit-the-sun\/\">how Earth orbits the Sun<\/a> and our planet&#8217;s position in its orbit at a given time.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In summer, we enjoy our best views of the Milky Way because that\u2019s when the Sun is farthest in our sky from the constellations that contain the brightest and most densely star-packed areas.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In spring, Earth\u2019s position gives us our best view of the constellations that contain the most galaxies. This includes galactic clusters, where it\u2019s possible to observe several galaxies at the same time.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">Many observers look forward to spring as Galaxy Season because, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/star-clusters-see-with-naked-eye\">naked-eye star clusters<\/a> like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/pleiades\/\">Pleiades<\/a>, M45, or bright nebulae such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/nebulae\/the-orion-nebula-m42\/\">Orion Nebula<\/a>, M42, the season\u2019s galaxies are challenging yet rewarding targets.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3352\" height=\"2532\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/NGC-4565-LRGB-8567ca9.jpg\" alt=\"The Needle Galaxy by Dan Crowson. It also contains fascinating galaxies, including:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M65<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"792\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/M065-008-5b98e99-e1599137499414.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M65\" class=\"wp-image-52621\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Klauser Franz \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">With a magnitude of 10.3, this spiral galaxy is 35 million lightyears away and is one member of the famous \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/leo-triplet\/\">Leo Triplet<\/a>\u2019, a trio of galaxies all visible in the same telescopic field of view.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">High magnifications reveal its tightly wound spiral arms and bright centre. It has a diameter of about 90,000 lightyears.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M66<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1218\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/03\/17.M66_MarkShelton-be536d1.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M66\" class=\"wp-image-106315\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Mark Shelton<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The brightest of the Leo Triplet, this barred spiral galaxy\u2019s arms are among the brightest of any galaxy\u2019s.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Shining at mag. 8.9, it\u2019s just visible through binoculars on a dark, Moon-free night, but you\u2019ll need a telescope to see its mottled arms. At mag. 10.1, it\u2019s visible in small telescopes, but with a larger instrument you\u2019ll also be able to see the faint spiral arm that curves away from it to the southeast.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>Leo 1<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/leo-i-galaxy-b35ff1c.jpeg\" alt=\"Galaxy Leo 1\" class=\"wp-image-107731\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Leo I galaxy, just to the right of bright star Regulus. Credit: Scott Anttila<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">If you fancy a challenge, this is it! Almost lost in the glare of nearby Regulus, Leo 1 is small, very diffuse and faint. Its magnitude of 11.2 means that only owners of large telescopes blessed with clear skies and no light pollution will see it clearly.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Even then it will appear as a small smear of light in the eyepiece. But that smear of light is a satellite galaxy of our own, just like the much larger and brighter Magellanic Clouds that grace the southern sky. This makes it a must-see this galaxy season.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-constellation-coma-berenices\"><strong>Constellation: Coma Berenices<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2185\" height=\"1508\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/spring-galaxies-coma-berenices-a9ad377.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing the location of Coma Berenices Credit: Pete Lawrence\" class=\"wp-image-107744\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chart showing the location of Coma Berenices Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/coma-berenices-constellation\/\">Coma Berenices<\/a> \u2013 or Berenice\u2019s hair \u2013 is one of those constellations that looks absolutely nothing like the object it\u2019s supposed to represent.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">You\u2019d need the imagination of Steven Spielberg to see \u2018maiden\u2019s hair\u2019 when you look at this spattering of faint stars between Leo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/plough-star-pattern\/\">the Plough<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">But swing a telescope towards it and you\u2019ll see lots of intriguing galaxies, including:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M64 The Black Eye Galaxy<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"746\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/M064-010-ea0f505-e1599137450865.jpg\" alt=\"M64 The Black Eye Galaxy\" class=\"wp-image-52620\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Klauser Franz \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">One of the most famous galaxies in the sky, eighth-magnitude M64 is bright enough to see as a small, misty patch in binoculars, but you\u2019ll need a telescope to appreciate how it got its strange nickname. Under high magnification you\u2019ll see a prominent dark dust lane \u2013 discovered by William Herschel \u2013 crossing the lower part of its bright central core.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>The Needle Galaxy<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/11.NeedleGalaxy_SimonWatts-3da1a76.jpg\" alt=\"The Needle Galaxy\" class=\"wp-image-107525\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Simon Watts<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">One of the most beautiful galaxies visible during galaxy season, NGC 4565 &#8211; or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/needle-galaxy\/\">Needle Galaxy<\/a> &#8211; is around 30 million lightyears away. It\u2019s an edge-on spiral and large instruments give wonderful views of its bright, round core and the dark dust lane that crosses it.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Many observers have wondered how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/the-making-of-messier\/\">Charles Messier<\/a> missed spotting this mag. 9.6 treat when putting together his famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/messier-catalogue\/\">Messier Catalogue<\/a>. It&#8217;s often used to illustrate how the Milky Way would appear to an observer on a distant world.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 4725<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/06\/17_NGC4725_Chad-Leader-792149b-e1646145073472.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy NGC 4725\" class=\"wp-image-92151\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Chad Leader<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">This eighth-magnitude barred spiral galaxy is 39 million lightyears away. Visible in binoculars as a small, oval-shaped smudge, it has been compared to a miniature version of M81.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">High magnification shows hints of the single spiral arm that curls away from its central bar.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 4494<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/03\/NGC_4494_u3cm6602r_core-899bb45.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy NGC 4494\" class=\"wp-image-105337\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Hubble Space Telescope<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">A mag. 9.7 elliptical galaxy, NGC 4494 is relatively unremarkable, visually, but it makes our list because it\u2019s a good example of what most galaxies actually look like when seen through a telescope.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Galaxies that look like Catherine wheels, with bright, star-frothed spiral arms, are the exception, and the vast majority appear more like little NGC 4494 \u2013 a small, faint smudge of pale grey.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-constellation-virgo\"><strong>Constellation: Virgo<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2521\" height=\"1654\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/spring-galaxies-virgo-c633db6.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing the location of the constellation Virgo. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Like neighbouring Leo, the constellation Virgo straddles the ecliptic, so it is often visited by the Moon and planets in Earth\u2019s night sky.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Although Virgo has quite an abstract shape, it contains many galaxies, including some of the best-known in the sky, such as:<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 4697<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/NGC-4697-6d230c1-e1650616482907.png\" alt=\"Galaxy NGC 4697\" class=\"wp-image-107736\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Hubble Space Telescope \/ http:\/\/hla.stsci.edu\/hlaview.html<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">This mag. 10.9 elliptical galaxy appears as a misty, flattened disc in a large telescope. Like most ellipticals, it has no outstanding visible features or structures, and really is a hazy ball of pale, ancient stars.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Astronomers have detected a huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\/\">black hole<\/a> at its centre with a mass between 50 and 100 million times greater than our Sun.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 4699<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"961\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/NGC4699-Rick-J-cloudynights-7ea9d1c-e1650616656507.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy NGC 4699\" class=\"wp-image-107737\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Rick J \/ www.cloudynights.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">This spiral galaxy is 65 million lightyears distant and has a magnitude of 9.4. Large telescopes show it as an almost flower-like object, composed of multiple faint rings and arcs.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It is around 85,000 lightyears across and was discovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/sir-william-herschel-astronomer-discovered-uranus\/\">William Herschel<\/a> in 1786.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M104 The Sombrero Galaxy<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/M104-LRGB-eefb7d6-e1599821057613.jpg\" alt=\"M104 The Sombrero Galaxy. Look at it through a telescope, however, and you\u2019ll see why it\u2019s compared to a Sombrero hat.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/sombrero-galaxy\/\">Sombrero Galaxy<\/a> is an edge-on spiral galaxy with a bright and unusually large central bulge that\u2019s crossed by a thin, dark dust lane. We now know that a 1 billion solar-mass supermassive black hole lurks at its centre.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 5746<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"890\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/ngc-5746-eff7b5b.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy NGC 5746\" class=\"wp-image-107739\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Franz Klauser \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">NGC 5746 is a typical edge-on spiral galaxy. It has a bright central bulge that\u2019s bisected by a dark lane of dust.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">With a magnitude of 10.0, it\u2019s too faint to be seen in binoculars and is little more than a faint misty line in small telescopes, making it a target that\u2019s best suited to larger instruments.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-virgo-cluster\"><strong>The Virgo Cluster<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1005\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/spring-galaxies-virgo-cluster-1c53f37.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing the location of the Virgo Cluster. These truly enormous structures, millions of lightyears across, contain vast numbers of galaxies of all shapes and sizes, moving through space together like snowflakes in a blizzard.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">There are several such clusters, each containing many deep-sky objects, but the Virgo Cluster, a spray of more than a thousand galaxies, is in a class of its own.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M87 Virgo A<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/M087-004-558157b.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M87 Virgo A\" class=\"wp-image-52920\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Bernhard Hubl \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The brightest member of the Virgo Cluster, this elliptical galaxy floats at a distance of 55 million lightyears and has a magnitude of 8.6, making it easily visible through binoculars. With a telescope it will appear as an almost circular hazy patch.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Images taken with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/hubble-space-telescope-facts-history\/\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> show a pair of high-energy jets shooting out of M87 like lighthouse beams. M87 is a huge galaxy, perhaps as much as half a million lightyears wide, and is surrounded by more than 12,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/globular-clusters\/\">globular clusters<\/a>, compared to the 200 or so that orbit the Milky Way.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M60<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"745\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/M060-002-6c37ce6-e1599137323739.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M60\" class=\"wp-image-52617\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Harald Strau\u00df<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">A true monster of a galaxy, this giant elliptical contains around a trillion stars. Shining at mag. 9.8, it\u2019s visible as a tiny smudge through binoculars, but large telescopes will clearly reveal its round shape and also its close visual companion, the spiral galaxy NGC 4647, which is about two-thirds the size of M60.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Discovered in 1779 by the German astronomer Johann Gottfried K\u00f6hler, M60 lies 54 million lightyears away from Earth.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M88<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2328\" height=\"1760\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/M88-halved-080d03f.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M88\" class=\"wp-image-13750\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: John Tonks<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Mag. 9.3 M88 is a giant spiral galaxy. Through a telescope it appears as a misty oval smudge, which some observers think resembles a shrunken version of M31, the Andromeda Galaxy.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Large instruments reveal hints of mottling within this compact spiral\u2019s tightly curved arms. Although it is part of the Virgo Cluster, it\u2019s located in nearby Coma Berenices.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M91<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"732\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/M091-004-f834b46-e1599735335480.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M91\" class=\"wp-image-53069\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Michael Breite, Stefan Heutz, Wolfgang Ries \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">This 11th magnitude galaxy is one of the faintest object in Messier\u2019s catalogue, and is 60 million lightyears away.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s a beautiful sight in a large scope, with two spiral arms curving away from its central bar, but you\u2019ll only see those with high magnification under a truly dark sky. It\u2019s also located in Coma Berenices.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>M100<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/M100-LRGB-988537a-e1599819977455.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxy M100\" class=\"wp-image-8737\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Dan Crowson<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Another beautiful galaxy, M100 has a magnitude of 9.3 and is 52 million lightyears away. Small telescopes show its bright centre and oval shape, while larger instruments reveal tantalising hints of its tight spiral arms.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading p1\"><strong>NGC 4438 \/ NGC 4435<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"970\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/04\/ngc-4438-306905e.jpg\" alt=\"Galaxies NGC 4438 \/ NGC 4435\" class=\"wp-image-107742\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Johannes Schedler \/ CCDGuide.com<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The final entry on our list of Galaxy Season galaxies! This close pair of spiral galaxies was nicknamed The Eyes by LS Copeland, who thought it looked like a pair of eyes staring back at him from the depths of space.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Together, they form part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/galaxies\/markarians-chain\/\">Markarian\u2019s Chain<\/a> asterism, a trail of galaxies that meanders across the Coma Berenices\/Virgo border.
