Credit: GMTO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>With such impressive observing capabilities, the Giant Magellan Telescope is tasked with exploring the Big Bang and the formation of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\">stars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a>.<\/p><p>Robert Shelton is the president of the Giant Magellan Telescope Observatory (GMTO), responsible for the construction of the new 25.4-metre Giant Magellan Telescope.<\/p><p>We got the chance to ask him how construction is going, and what we might expect from this new observatory.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/robert-shelton-gmto-818x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C1001\" alt=\"Robert Shelton is the president of the Giant Magellan Telescope Observatory (GMTO), responsible for the construction of the new 25.4-metre Giant Magellan Telescope \" class=\"wp-image-147943\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: GMTO<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-will-the-giant-magellan-telescope-offer-astronomers\"><strong>What will the Giant Magellan Telescope offer astronomers?<\/strong><\/h3><p>The Giant Magellan Telescope \u2013 due to see first light in 2031 \u2013 will be optimal for looking at light from Earth-like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\">exoplanets<\/a>.<\/p><p>It will be able to decompose this light and detect whether there are molecular signs of life as we know it, from diatomic oxygen to methane to ozone to carbon dioxide.<\/p><p>Astronomers are also excited about the light-collecting area of the telescope, because it means that we can detect small signals, looking far back into how the cosmos formed: how the lights turned on, how ionisation started, how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a> were formed.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/giant-magellan-telescope-mirrors-1024x576.jpeg?fit=800%2C450\" alt=\"Artist's illustration of the viewing platform and the primary mirror of the Giant Magellan Telescope. Credit: GMTO\" class=\"wp-image-147947\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What observing power does the telescope have?<\/strong><\/h3><p>The telescope\u2019s primary mirror is composed of seven segments that form a 25.4-metre-diameter light-collecting surface, the seventh of which was started in October 2023.<\/p><p>These mirrors are 8.4 metres in diameter.<\/p><p>They capture the light, sending it up to a cluster of secondary mirrors that are called \u2018adaptive\u2019.<\/p><p>These rapidly deform in real time, to remove \u2018wiggles\u2019 in the telescope signals caused by the atmosphere.<\/p><p>The first of these secondary mirrors will roll out for testing by the end of the year.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After the molten glass has been cast, how long does it take one of the primary mirrors to cool?<\/strong><\/h3><p>It takes three to four months. The mirror is 17 tonnes, but you have to treat it gently.<\/p><p>The mirror lab at the University of Arizona has done this several times.<\/p><p>Making the first one is always the challenge and then the second comes along much more quickly.<\/p><p>The first primary mirror segment took about 4.5 years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/giant-magellan-telescope-mirror-casting.jpeg\" alt=\"Dust is vacuumed off one of the Giant Magellan Telescope's primary mirror segments at the University of Arizona Richard F. Credit: Damien Jemison, Giant Magellan Telescope \u2013 GMTO Corporation<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the advantages of ground-based telescopes over space-based?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><p>They\u2019re much less expensive and easier to modify than space-based telescopes.<\/p><p>Within the Giant Magellan Telescope\u2019s 50-year operating span, there\u2019s a plan to update and create new scientific instruments as technology evolves.<\/p><p>You typically can\u2019t update space telescopes once launched, but new ideas and technologies are developing all the time.<\/p><p>By the time Hubble or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-observe-universe\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> launched, they were working with older electronics.<\/p><p>Ground-based telescopes also provide more opportunities to observe time-critical events such as planetary transits, stellar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/occultation-astronomy-what\">occultations<\/a>, Solar System events and rapidly changing explosive transients.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will the Giant Magellan work with space-based telescopes like Webb?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><p>There will be a great deal of complementarity.<\/p><p>Astronomers are very good at sharing data and we\u2019re making preparations to share the data with the entire world.<\/p><p>We\u2019ll also observe both optical and infrared, while JWST works on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/infrared-astronomy\">infrared<\/a>, so they will complement one another.<\/p><p>The verb \u2018to confirm\u2019 is a powerful one \u2013 having the extra information in the optical will also allow us to confirm other discoveries.<\/p><p>Sometimes, to detect a molecule you need to know details about it from across the spectrum.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What inspires you about working with the Giant Magellan Telescope?<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/giant-magellan-telescope-construction.jpeg\" alt=\"Overhead view of the chalking of the Giant Magellan Telescope mirrors on the ground, representing the shadow of the telescope mirror array.
