Credit: Mark Garlic \/ Science Photo Library<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">For thousands of years, our ancient ancestors tracked the path of the Sun across the sky.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Watching it rise and set at different positions throughout the year and constructing monuments such as the prehistoric stone circle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/stonehenge-astronomy\/\">Stonehenge<\/a> in Wiltshire to keep track of its movement.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">June is a key month in the Sun\u2019s path and also at Stonehenge, where thousands visit to mark the summer solstice \u2013 the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The word \u2018solstice\u2019 comes to us from Latin, \u2018sol\u2019 meaning Sun and \u2018sistere\u2019 to stand still.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But why does the Sun appear to stand still? Credit: Michael Moltenbrey<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-solstices-equinoxes-and-earth-s-orbit\"><strong>Solstices, equinoxes and Earth&#8217;s orbit<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p4\">We know that the changing position of the Sun in the sky is down to various factors involving the movement and position of our own planet over the year.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Earth is 150 million kilometres from the Sun and orbits it along a slightly elliptical path at a speed of 107,208 kilometres per hour.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">One orbit takes approximately 365 days.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Our planet isn\u2019t upright in its orbit; it\u2019s tilted at an angle of 23.4\u00b0 and spins on an axis (an imaginary line that passes through the North Pole to the South Pole) at a speed of 1,670 kilometres per hour.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">One spin takes 24 hours.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"992\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/08\/GettyImages-140085796-1-3edf417-e1596546590541.jpg\" alt=\"The changing of the seasons, solstices and equinoxes are a visible sign of Earth's tilt and orbit around the Sun. Credit: Peter Adams \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p4\">The tilt, rotation and elliptical orbit of Earth all give rise to changes in the amount of sunlight that we receive in each hemisphere throughout the year, and this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/earth-seasons\/\">why we have seasons<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">When the top of Earth is tilted towards the Sun, the Northern Hemisphere experiences summer, while the Southern Hemisphere faces away and people there have their winter.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Six months later and the seasons flip in each hemisphere.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Our seasons in the astronomical calendar are determined by two solstices and two equinoxes a year.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">A solstice occurs at the two points in Earth\u2019s orbit when our globe is at its maximum tilt either towards or away from the Sun.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">Equinoxes happen at the two points of the orbit when the Sun appears directly over the equator.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">The solstices and equinoxes divide the year into four parts: spring, summer, autumn and winter.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"694\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/06\/earth-orbit-equinox-solstice-08e679c.jpg\" alt=\"Earth\u2019s tilt affects how much direct light we receive from the Sun, which causes the yearly cycle of the seasons, solstices and equinoxes\" class=\"wp-image-119505\" title=\"Earth\u2019s tilt affects how much direct light we receive from the Sun, which causes the yearly cycle of the seasons\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Earth\u2019s tilt affects how much direct light we receive from the Sun, which causes the yearly cycle of the seasons, solstices and equinoxes<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p4\" id=\"h-summer-solstice-and-earth-s-tilt\"><b>Summer solstice and Earth&#8217;s tilt<\/b><\/h2><p class=\"p4\">The summer solstice occurs when that hemisphere\u2019s pole is tilted at its maximum angle towards the Sun.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">During this time, we experience a day with the longest period of daylight, 16 or so hours in the UK.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">In 2023 the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere fell on 21 June.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">On this day at 3:57pm BST the Sun reached the most northerly point along its path through the sky (the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/ecliptic-tracing-sun-path-across-the-sky\/\">ecliptic<\/a>) before moving south again.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">This is what is meant by the Sun \u2018standing still\u2019.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">The winter solstice is the opposite and occurs in December, when the North Pole is tilted at its maximum angle away from the Sun and the Sun reaches its most southerly point in the sky.<\/p><p>In 2023 the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere occurred at at 03:28 UT on 22 December.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">You might think that because Earth is tilted towards the Sun during the summer solstice, that that\u2019s when we are closest to our star.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">But this is not the case. In fact, the point at which our planet is closest to the Sun (perihelion) is in early January.<\/p><p class=\"p4\">On 21 June, Earth was actually nearing the point at which it is furthest away from the Sun (aphelion), in early July.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/09\/Autumn-equinox-d59316e.jpg\" alt=\"Equinoxes occur when the Sun crosses the celestial equator.
