We&#8217;ll find out in autumn 2024&#8230; <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Stuart Atkinson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 20 March 2024 at 14:44 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Have you heard about Comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) yet?<\/p><p>Comet observers are all hoping for big things from comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS) in autumn 2024.<\/p><p>When it was discovered, it was hailed as a potential \u2018comet of the century\u2019 and calculations suggested it might become as bright as mag. -4!<\/p><p>It\u2019s now thought that at best A3 will reach mag. 0.4, a lot fainter but still much brighter than the last really bright comet, C\/2020 F3 (NEOWISE), which delighted sky-watchers in summer 2020.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/greatest-comets-of-recent-times\/\"><em><strong>10 great comets of recent times<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/what-comets-asteroids-in-sky-tonight\/\"><em><strong>What comets and asteroids are in the sky tonight?<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">C\/2023 P1 (Nishimura) captured from Valencia, Spain by Jos\u00e9 J. Chamb\u00f3 on 9 September 2023 at 04:21 UT.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Perhaps you&#8217;ve been excited by recent news of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/comet-12p-pons-brooks\">Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks<\/a> visible in the early spring sky.<\/p><p>Well, absolutely no promises, but towards the end of 2024 we might have a comet in the sky as bright as E3 was, or even brighter.<\/p><p>If the most optimistic predictions are to believed it might even be the best comet for a long time. It\u2019s far too soon to be making predictions like that.<\/p><p>The ball of ice and dust that has eyebrows raising and hopes rising is called C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS).<\/p><p>It was spotted in February 2023 during a sky survey performed by <a href=\"https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ATLAS \u2013 the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System<\/a> \u2013 using the 0.5-m f\/2 Schmidt reflector telescope operated at the Sutherland Observatory in South Africa.<\/p><p>Back then it was just an uninspiring 18<sup>th<\/sup> magnitude spot on a photo, and it was given the equally uninspiring name &#8216;A10SVYR&#8217;.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1292\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/03\/C-2023-A3-Tsuchinshan-ATLAS-c34ae8a.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-116903\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Images of Comet C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS) captured on 24 February 2023 by \u0424\u0438\u043b\u0438\u043f\u043f \u0420\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432 (Filipp Romanov) using the iTelescope.net remote telescope. Credit: @romanov_filipp<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>But when its orbit was calculated it was noticed that it had already been spotted by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China, on 9 January 2023, when it was magnitude 18.7.<\/p><p>Follow-up observations revealed A10SVYR had a short tail, so it was designated a comet, and following the long-established naming convention it was given a name honouring both its discoverers: C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-everyone-talking-about-c-2023-a3-tsuchinshan-atlas\"><strong>Why is everyone talking about C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)?<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/comet-pons-brooks-cheltenham-1024x896.jpg?fit=800%2C700\" alt=\"Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks captured on 5 March 2024 by Tim Jackson from Cheltenham, UK. Equipment: Zwo 2600mc pro camera, Askar FRA500 telescope, Zwo AM5 mount.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>As Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks is due to fade from Northern Hemisphere skies in April 2024, comet-chasers are already thinking about A3, which could be a beautiful sight come autumn.<\/p><p>Comet A3\u2019s orbit will bring it close enough to both the Sun and the Earth in September\/October 2024.<\/p><p>There is a good chance it will be visible to the naked eye, and has the <i>potential<\/i> to be a bright naked eye comet.<\/p><p>It\u2019s easy to get carried away by this, but perhaps understandable. Credit: Alan Hale (used with permission)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>You might remember how beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/comet-hale-bopp-visitor-from-edge-solar-system\/\">Comet Hale-Bopp<\/a> was back in 1997, and even if you didn\u2019t see it yourself, if you speak its name at an astronomy society meeting you\u2019ll see many of the people there smile, as fond memories of seeing its twin tails painted on the spring sky come flooding back.<\/p><p>But anyone predicting A3 will be &#8216;another Hale-Bopp&#8217; is being very unwise. Credit: Linda Davison<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-we-know-about-c-2023-a3-tsuchinshan-atlas\"><strong>What <em>do<\/em> we know about C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)<\/strong><\/h2><p>Initial data seems to suggest that Comet C\/2023 A3 completes an orbit every 80,000 years.<\/p><p>As of spring 2024, A3 is a 13th-magnitude speck in Libra, visible only through large telescopes and on long-exposure images.<\/p><p>By the end of September, it will be a morning object, perhaps shining as brightly as mag. 0.6, but rising just before the Sun.<\/p><p>Our best views of A3 will come when it moves up into the evening sky around 10 October.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/09\/C-2023-A3-Tsuchinshan-ATLAS-location-1024x545.jpg?fit=800%2C426\" alt=\"A view of Comet's C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) location as of March 2024, captured using Stellarium software.\" class=\"wp-image-148241\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A view of Comet&#8217;s C\/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) location as of March 2024, captured using Stellarium software.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>By then it will have faded slightly, but is predicted to still be as bright as mag. 0.8, low in the west after sunset.<\/p><p>Hopefully by then it will have grown a tail, but we can\u2019t count on that.<\/p><p>By mid-October the comet will still be a first-magnitude object, setting almost three hours after the Sun, and should be a lovely sight to the naked eye and in binoculars and telescopes too.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">Comet C\/2023 A3 is due to reach perihelion &#8211; the closest point to the Sun in its orbit &#8211; on 28 September 2024.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/comet-pons-brooks-utah-1024x765.jpg?fit=800%2C598\" alt=\"Comet 12P\/Pons-Brooks captured by Leonardo Leite on 28 February 2024 from Tooele, Utah, USA. Equipment: SV405CC camera, Samyang 135mm f\/2 lens @ f\/2.8, AzGti equatorial mount.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">We know that at the moment A3 is so faint it is only visible in large telescopes, and that won\u2019t change for months.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">We know that if it behaves itself, early summer 2024 it <i>should<\/i> start to become visible in the evening sky through small telescopes.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">It <i>might<\/i> be bright enough to be visible through binoculars or even to the naked eye in late September 2024, when it will be a pre-dawn object, <i>very<\/i> low in the east before sunrise.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">Will it have a tail by then? We don\u2019t know. Equipment: Takahashi FSQ85, Atik 460ex, Skywatcher NEQ6 pro mount<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-bright-will-c-2023-a3-get\"><strong>How bright will C\/2023 A3 get?<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">How bright will the comet be during mid-October 2024?<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">Some experts are suggesting it might reach first or even zero magnitude, making it obvious to the naked eye (for info on what this means, read our guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/stellar-magnitudes-how-measure-star-brightness\/\">stellar magnitude<\/a>)<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">Others are saying we&#8217;ll be lucky if it&#8217;s even third, which would make it &#8216;another E3&#8217; not &#8216;another Hale-Bopp&#8217;, only visible to most people through binoculars. We just don\u2019t know. <\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">If this all sounds very vague, that\u2019s just the way it is. Comets are hard to predict, and have a habit of not living up to expectations.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">The comet is a long, long way away, and not doing much yet.<\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">But as it gets closer, and more and more people see and photograph it, we\u2019ll have a better idea of what it will do when it approaches and then passes us late in 2024. <\/p><p class=\"yiv2963558115msonormal\">Keep checking back on this page.
