{"id":56509,"date":"2024-03-21T08:41:36","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T08:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/3cb1c283-31f4-4001-a367-a575292864f8"},"modified":"2024-03-21T09:32:31","modified_gmt":"2024-03-21T09:32:31","slug":"april-8-eclipse-marks-the-second-of-two-major-solar-eclipses-visible-across-the-us","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcskyatnight\/rss_feed\/april-8-eclipse-marks-the-second-of-two-major-solar-eclipses-visible-across-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"April 8 eclipse marks the second of two major solar eclipses visible across the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">An annular eclipse on 14 October 2023 and total solar eclipse on 8 April 2024 are both eagerly anticipated by US observers. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Jamie Carter\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 21 March 2024 at 08:41 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p class=\"p1\">Eclipses are one of nature\u2019s most mesmerising spectaclesm and observers in the US are being treated to two spectacular eclipses within a few months.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Eclipse-chasers are often willing to fly half-way around the world to remote, hard-to-reach locations just for the chance to see the phenomenon.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The past half-year has marked a unique opportunity as not just one but two eclipses will have crossed one another over North America.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">On October 14 2023, a \u2018ring of fire\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/annular-solar-eclipse\">annular solar eclipse<\/a> passed across 10 countries, with a long section of the path running straight through the USA.<\/p><p>And on April 8 a total solar eclipse will be seen across Mexico, the USA and Canada.<\/p><p><em><strong>Find out when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/solar-lunar-eclipse-guide-when-where\">next eclipse<\/a> is taking place<\/strong><\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Annular solar eclipse of October 14 2023 captrued by Chirag Bachani, San Antonio, Texas.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">The October 14 annular eclipse was a warm-up to the second event 177 days later on 8 April 2024, when a total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\/\">solar eclipse<\/a> will pass across the USA, Mexico and Canada, with an estimated 32 million people living inside the path of totality.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">There\u2019s even a region in Texas \u2013 including much of San Antonio \u2013 that will see both.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This pair of eclipses is the most accessible in decades.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-total-solar-eclipse-april-8-2024\"><strong>Total solar eclipse, April 8 2024<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/03\/Total-eclipse-24-1-1024x621.jpg?fit=800%2C485\" alt=\"Map showing the path of the April 8 total solar eclipse. Credit: BBC Sky at Night Magazine \/ Paul Wootton<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">This total solar eclipse is being called the Great North American Eclipse and is expected to be one of the most-viewed eclipses in recent history.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The path of totality will be around 190km wide, with a maximum duration of 4 minutes and 28 seconds visible in Durango, Mexico.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Totality will be seen first in Mazatl\u00e1n on the Pacific coast at 11:09 MST (17:09 UT), crossing into the US in Texas at 13:27 CDT (18:27 UT), moving up through the country, eventually crossing into Canada.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The Moon\u2019s central shadow will leave land at South Bird Island, Newfoundland at 17:13 NDT (19:43 UT).<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The closer you stand to the centre of the path of totality the longer you\u2019ll be able to see totality.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">But you\u2019ll also want to consider the weather, and sites further southwest have a better chance of clear skies, with Mexico having the clearest skies for the time of year.<\/p><p><strong><em>Read our complete guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/total-solar-eclipse-8-april-2024\/\">April 8 total solar eclipse<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-october-14-2023-annular-solar-eclipse\"><strong>October 14 2023 annular solar eclipse<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"931\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/03\/14-october-2023-us-eclipse-chart-e6bb007-e1690360475971.jpg\" alt=\"Chart showing a map of the USA and paths for different degrees of annularity for 14 October 2023 annular eclipse. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">The Moon\u2019s elliptical orbit means sometimes it blocks all but the outer edge of the Sun, leaving an annulus (ring) of light: an annular solar eclipse.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">During October\u2019s eclipse, the Moon covered almost 91% of the Sun for up to 5 minutes and 17 seconds.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The path of annularity, where observers would see the \u2018ring of fire\u2019, touched land in Oregon at 09:13 PDT (16:13 UT) moving southwest until leaving Texas at 12:03 CDT (17:03 UT), before passing over Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil, where it ended at 16:48 BRT (19:48 UT).<\/p><p class=\"p2\">The path of annularity was up to 225km wide and the longest eclipse was off the coast of Nicaragua in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p><p><strong><em>Read our complete guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/october-14-annular-solar-eclipse\">October 14 annular solar eclipse<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-the-best-view\"><strong>Getting the best view<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p1\">The eclipses will be visible anywhere in their paths of totality or annularity, but there are many iconic sites you might want to visit.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The map below shows a selection of parks and cities in the paths (including Roswell, home of the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/roswell-ufo-incident\/\">Roswell UFO incident<\/a>, New Mexico and Carbondale, lllinois, which also saw the 2017 eclipse).<\/p><p>You can see the paths of both eclipses in our map below.
