This is it in a nutshell."},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The \u20183-body problem\u2019 has long been the bane of astrophysicists. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Chris Lintott\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 22 March 2024 at 08:18 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>The three body problem describes the gravitational issues involved in predicting how three objects in an orbital system will behave. <\/p><p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/isaac-newton\/\">Isaac Newton<\/a> knew that if you have a system involving two objects \u2013 a single planet orbiting a star, for example \u2013 then with a little understanding of how gravity works you can calculate how both will move.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Add a third object to the system, like a moon, and that predictability disappears. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">Things start off alright, but even a tiny change in the starting positions of any one of the three objects soon produces wildly different predictions for what the state of things will be in the future.<\/p><p>As we can never know the initial positions of the three objects to infinite precision, then this chaotic behaviour means that the state of the system in the far future (and the distant past) is hidden from us and cannot be calculated.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Planet orbiting a star? Credit: Dan Durda<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-solving-the-three-body-problem\"><strong>Solving the three body problem<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">The \u2018three body problem\u2019, as it\u2019s come to be known, is a big headache. <\/p><p class=\"p2\">In physics textbooks and university exam papers, you can have a perfectly isolated system consisting of just a star and an orbiting world, but the real Universe shuns such simplicity.<\/p><p class=\"p2\">In star forming regions, in clusters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-stars\">stars<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a>, in planet formation and in the interaction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black holes<\/a>, the movement of celestial objects involves three body systems more often than not.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Although the three body problem can\u2019t be solved analytically (where a set of equations leads to a single, definitive answer), some progress can be made.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">There is a paper from two astronomers that shed light on this old problem, taking a statistical approach to what might happen.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/03\/ligo-7833860.jpg\" alt=\"Solving the three body problem could be of major importance to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory \u00a9 LIGO\" class=\"wp-image-24910\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Solving the three body problem could be of major importance to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory \u00a9 LIGO<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\"><strong>Enter the third body!<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">The systems they studied are created when a nice, predictable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/double-binary-stars-guide\">binary star<\/a> is approached by a third star, the kind of thing that must happen all the time in young <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/star-clusters-astronomer-guide\">star clusters<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Most of the time, the models show the resulting triple system behaves as a binary with a distant, third star interacting only weakly with the two at the centre.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">But as that interloper swings around there come periods of time where a mad scramble ensues.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This period ends when one of the stars is thrown back out to a distance where it is just a third star, a process which repeats and repeats until a star is ejected completely.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2020\/02\/triple-star-system-1024x576.jpg?fit=800%2C450\" alt=\"Three suns! Hurt (Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, or IPAC<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\"><strong>Three body problem and black holes<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">These calculations aren\u2019t analytical predictions of what might happen: they\u2019re just what the computer program thinks will happen next in any given circumstance.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The clever bit is that by running many such simulations the team could get a prediction of what is likely to happen.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">That will be of enormous help to astronomers working in all sorts of fields.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">One group looking extremely closely will be those trying to understand the collisions of black holes that produce the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/what-are-gravitational-waves\">gravitational waves<\/a> observed by facilities such as LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/03\/black-holes-colliding-gravitational-waves-7f7c970.jpg\" alt=\"The collision of two black holes produces ripples in spacetime known as 'gravitational waves'.
