Equipment: Canon 600D, 75-300mm<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Before the advent of electric lighting, a bright full Moon like the Worm Moon must have been a great comfort to travellers who had to undertake journeys under the cloak of darkness.<\/p><p>Many astronomers avoid a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/moon\/full-moon\">full Moon<\/a>, however, as it washes out everything else in the night sky, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/meteor-showers-how-observe-record-shooting-stars\">meteor showers<\/a> and deep-sky objects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/beginners-guide-nebulae\">nebulae<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/star-clusters-astronomer-guide\">star clusters<\/a>.<\/p><p>Nevertheless, it&#8217;s a beautiful sight to behold and there&#8217;s still a lot you can enjoy if you&#8217;re stepping outside to observe tonight&#8217;s Worm Moon.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-it-called-a-worm-moon\"><strong>Why is it called a Worm Moon?<\/strong><\/h2><p>Every full Moon of the year has a nickname, and even though a full Moon might have a name like &#8216;Strawberry Moon&#8217; or &#8216;Wolf Moon&#8217;, this doesn&#8217;t actually reflect any change in appearance from one full Moon to the next.<\/p><p>So why is a Worm Moon called a Worm Moon?<\/p><p>The term &#8216;Worm Moon&#8217; is thought to be a result of the March full Moon heralding the beginning of warmer spring weather, as earthworms begin to appear and nature springs to life following a cold, dark winter.<\/p><p>The emergence of earthworms in warmer weather in turn provides food for newborn birds and other animals awaking from hibernation.<\/p><p>Nature feels alive again, and the humble worm is a great signifier of the activity that lies ahead as spring turns to summer.<\/p><p>Perhaps the term &#8216;Worm Moon&#8217; for the full Moon in March is more apt than it initially appears!<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Observing the Worm Moon<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/02\/Supermoon-Over-Elkhart-Hill-J-Rhoades_0-0a1fc1d.jpg\" alt=\"Supermoon Over Central Illinois by Joshua Rhoades, Elkhart, Illinois, USA. Equipment: Canon 700D, 100-400mm lens, X2 teleconvertor<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/moon-illusion\">Moon illusion<\/a> is the name given to the fact that a rising Moon appears enormous when it&#8217;s low down and close to the horizon.<\/p><p>No-one has ever been able to confirm why this happens, but it&#8217;s thought to be a result of the bright full Moon dwarfing foreground objects like buildings and trees, making the Moon simply appear larger.<\/p><p>Hold your arm out at length and cover the Moon with your thumb. You&#8217;ll see the Moon isn&#8217;t actually any bigger than it would be if it were higher in the sky.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lunar halo<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1079\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/02\/10.TomWildoner_LunarHalo-4aa4cb2.jpg\" alt=\"Lunar halo captured by Tom Wildoner, Pennsylvia, USA, 29 December 2020\" class=\"wp-image-58611\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lunar halo captured by Tom Wildoner, Pennsylvia, USA, 29 December 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p1\">Sometimes you might see a bright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/moon-ring-halo\">halo around the Moon<\/a> during a full Moon.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">This happens because bright moonlight is shining through surrounding clouds, causing the appearance of haloes and other atmospheric phenomena.<\/p><p>If you&#8217;re observing the Worm Moon tonight, see if you can observe any tricks of light caused by the bright lunar glare.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Observe, sketch, photograph and marvel<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/02\/GettyImages-657482190-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Photograph the full Moon with your smartphone. Credit: Brigitte Bl\u00e4ttler \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Don&#8217;t avoid a full Moon because conventional astronomical wisdom tells you to!<\/p><p>It&#8217;s said the best time to observe the Moon is during crescent and gibbous phases, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/moon-terminator\">terminator<\/a> &#8211; the line dividing the lit and unlit portions of the Earth-facing side of the Moon &#8211; is present, because shadows accentuate craters and other surface features.<\/p><p>But you can still head out and look up at the bright full Moon and get to know its various features.<\/p><p>Binoculars will enable you to explore the lunar surface, including its craters and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/lunar-maria-guide-list-seas-moon\">lunar maria<\/a> &#8211; or seas.<\/p><p>You could also try locating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/skills\/see-apollo-landing-sites-moon\">Apollo landing sites on the Moon<\/a>.<\/p><p>And have a go at sketching the lunar surface, then compare your sketchings with family and friends.
