Evans (University of Virginia, Charlottesville\/NRAO\/Stony Brook University)<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-structure-of-our-milky-way-galaxy\"><strong>Structure of our Milky Way galaxy<\/strong><\/h2><p>The Milky Way galaxy has several main components.<\/p><p>There is a densely packed region, called the central bulge, that spans 10,000 lightyears and is filled with stars<\/p><p> This is home to our Galaxy\u2019s central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/black-hole\">black hole<\/a>, Sagittarius A*.<\/p><p>Extending from this are several spiral arms, curving through a disc of stars.<\/p><p>There is a 1,000-lightyear-deep \u2018thin disc\u2019 of young stars, surrounded by an 8,500-lightyear-deep \u2018thick disc\u2019 filled with older stars.<\/p><p>Surrounding all of this is a halo with a sparse scattering of stars and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/stars\/star-clusters\/globular-clusters\">globular clusters<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/earth-in-milky-way-1024x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C800\" alt=\"Artist's impression showing where the Sun and Earth are located in the Milky Way. Credit: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Determining the birth of the Milky Way galaxy<\/strong><\/h2><p>Globular clusters are known to contain some of the oldest stars in the Universe.<\/p><p>Those surrounding our Milky Way appear to have formed when the first stars were beginning to shine in the Universe, around 300 million years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/questions-about-big-bang\">Big Bang<\/a>.<\/p><p>This is when the first pieces of the Milky Way began to appear.<\/p><p>Measuring the ages of stars in the disc is trickier, as astronomers need to find suitable stellar targets right across the disc.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/Euclid-NGC-6397-1024x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C800\" alt=\"The Milky Way is circled by globular clusters, balls of old stars from the earliest epochs of the Universe. Anselmi; CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>One team did this in 2022 by looking for sub-giant stars \u2013 those just on the cusp of becoming red giants.<\/p><p>This era of a star\u2019s life only lasts a short time, making it a very accurate measure of their age.<\/p><p>It also means they are rare, as there\u2019s only a short timeframe you can catch them.<\/p><p>Fortunately, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-missions\/esas-gaia-mapping-the-milky-way\">Gaia spacecraft<\/a> has spent more than a decade measuring over a billion stars in the Milky Way.<\/p><p>Scouring this huge catalogue, the team were able to track down 250,000 sub-giant stars and discover their ages.<\/p><p>These reveal that the thick disc formed at around the same time as the halo.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"806\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2019\/05\/Gaia_Milky_Way_Image_-ESAGaiaDPAC-CC-BY-SA-3.0-IGO-5e7ebb3.jpg\" alt=\"Gaia's all-sky view of the Milky Way based on the measurements of almost 1.7 billion stars.
