Credit: Mrs \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Yes, the Moon is slowly moving away from Earth in its orbit, and this has had an effect on Earth&#8217;s tides when we compare it over billions of years.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The Moon is drifting away from Earth at a rate of 3.8cm per year, and we know this thanks to measurements taken by a device placed on the Moon by Apollo astronauts, called the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment.<\/p><p>However, just after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/how-did-moon-form\/\">Moon\u2019s formation<\/a>, our satellite circled much, much closer, and each day on Earth was only around four hours long.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/09\/Lunar-Laser-Ranging-Experiment-cab9722.jpeg\" alt=\"A section of the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment, photographed on the surface of the Moon by Apollo 15 astronaut David Scott. Scott<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading p3\" id=\"h-measuring-how-much-the-moon-is-moving-away\"><strong>Measuring how much the Moon is moving away<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"p3\">But what\u2019s not clear is exactly how the Earth\u2013Moon system has evolved over the 4.5 billion years since: how have the time Earth takes to rotate and the Moon takes to orbit changed over time?<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Computer modelling studies widely disagree. What\u2019s needed are some actual data points from Earth\u2019s deep history.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">And this is where geology can provide crucial insights.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Certain kinds of rock were formed from submerged dunes in shallow coastal waters, and show alternating layers of deposited sand and mud, created by strong and weak currents respectively, at different times of the tidal cycle.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2022\/09\/GettyImages-957629172-aff4663-e1663844112796.jpg\" alt=\"Coastal sandstone. Credit: Jenny Dettrick \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">Tom Eulenfeld and Christoph Heubeck, both at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.igw.uni-jena.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Geosciences, Friedrich Schiller University Jena<\/a>, Germany, reexamined the oldest example of this in the geological record.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s known as the Moodies Group sandstone in South Africa, and dates back a staggering 3.22 billion years.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">The thickness of these alternating layers cycles every 15 layers, believed to be due to the varying current strengths over the cycle between spring and neap tides over a month. <\/p><p class=\"p3\">These geological measurements, combined with the application of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/johannes-kepler-biography\/\">Johannes Kepler<\/a>\u2019s third law of planetary motion, enabled Eulenfeld and Heubeck to reconstruct the rate of Earth\u2019s spin and Moon\u2019s orbital period at the time these ancient rocks were deposited.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1342\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/01\/Earthshine-ea20bdc-e1609939728714.jpg\" alt=\"Billions of years ago, the Moon orbited Earth much closer than it does today. Tafreshi (twanight.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"p3\">They calculate that 3.2 billion years ago the Earth\u2013Moon distance was around 70% of the current value, and that Earth\u2019s rotation rate then resulted in a year of about 700 days, with each day lasting around 13 hours.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">Previous measurements of 650-million-year-old rocks from South Australia place the Earth\u2013Moon distance at 97% of today\u2019s separation at that time.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">With these points to fill in the gaps, computer models can begin to build a much better picture of how the dance of the Moon around Earth has changed over time.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><em><strong>Lewis Dartnell was reading <\/strong><\/em><strong>Constraints on Moon\u2019s Orbit 3.2 Billion Years Ago from Tidal Bundle Data<\/strong><em><strong> by Tom Eulenfeld and Christoph Heubeck.
