Here&#8217;s when, where and what to expect. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 04 April 2024 at 07:43 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>If you&#8217;re in the UK and you&#8217;re waiting for a total solar eclipse to come to you, you&#8217;ll need saint-like patience.<\/p><p>Totality will next visit the British Isles on 23 September 2090.<\/p><p>But before this decade is out the Sun will be partially eclipsed no fewer than seven times as seen from the UK, with the biggest being a whopping 96%.<\/p><p>Here\u2019s everything you need to know about upcoming UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/solar-eclipses\">solar eclipses<\/a> for the rest of the decade.<\/p><p><strong><em>For more advice, read our guide to find out when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/solar-lunar-eclipse-guide-when-where\">next eclipse<\/a> is taking place or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov\/SEdecade\/SEdecade2021.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA&#8217;s spectacularly detailed eclipse website<\/a> for maps and timings<\/em><\/strong><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-upcoming-uk-solar-eclipses\"><strong>7 upcoming UK solar eclipses<\/strong><\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-april-2024-northern-ireland-scotland-wales-lake-district-lancaster\"><strong>8 April 2024 &#8211; Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Lake District, Lancaster<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Lake District is one of few places in the UK where the April 8 solar eclipse will be just about visible. Credit: Joe Daniel Price \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Mexico, the USA and Canada are getting very excited about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/total-solar-eclipse-8-april-2024\">April 8 total solar eclipse<\/a>, which brings up to 4 minutes 28 seconds of totality.<\/p><p>That makes it the longest on land since 2010.<\/p><p>However, the UK does get a look in, of sorts, during the April 8 2024 eclipse\u2019s very final moments.<\/p><p>From Northern Ireland and the west coasts of Scotland and Wales, as well as from the Lake District and Lancaster, a partial solar eclipse will begin on 8 April 2024 just as the Sun is setting.<\/p><p>Observers need to be as far south and west as possible to see anything, with a flat ocean horizon (and clear skies) critical.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/april-8-2024-eclipse-uk-898x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C912\" alt=\"Chart showing how the April 8 2024 solar eclipse will appear from the UK. Credit: Pete Lawrence<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>From north-west Scotland, the horns of a partially eclipsed Sun will set, as <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse2024.org\/blue-animation2\/animation.html?eclipse=2024_total&amp;latitude=58.46993&amp;longitude=5.1317&amp;tz=GMT&amp;tz_abb=GMT&amp;horizonAlt=0.0&amp;time=C1&amp;bottom_label=2024 eclipse &amp;cache=1698943173\">this simulation<\/a> shows.\u00a0<\/p><p>From the North Atlantic, it will be technically possible to see a totally eclipse sunset.<\/p><p>That\u2019s a bucket-list view for even very experienced eclipse-chasers and it\u2019s precisely what may be seen by cruisers on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredolsencruises.com\/cruise\/crossing-the-path-of-the-solar-eclipse-t2406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Fred Olsen Cruise Lines\u2019 Bolette<\/a>, which will divert from its route from Southampton to the Azores to intercept the path of totality just as the moon\u2019s shadow leaves Earth.<\/p><p>That could be a spectacular prelude to some more sure-fire partial solar eclipses from the UK mainland in the late-2020s.<\/p><p>For more info, read our guide on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/advice\/april-8-solar-eclipse-uk-ireland\">observing the April 8 solar eclipse from UK and Ireland<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>29 March 2025 &#8211; all of UK<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1410048629-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"London will see 30% of the Sun disappear behind the Moon during the 29 March 2025 partial solar eclipse. Credit: Peter Zelei Images \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Next comes a partial solar eclipse that\u2019s almost a total.<\/p><p>From Hudson Bay in a remote part of northern Quebec, Canada, as much as 94% of the Sun will be eclipsed.<\/p><p>Those looking for good upcoming UK solar eclipses should take note.<\/p><p>From the UK it this one still be significant, with the Outer Hebrides seeing about 47%, Northern Ireland 44% and West Wales 38%.<\/p><p>Londoners will see 30% of the Sun disappear behind the Moon.<\/p><p>This mid-morning event with the eclipse about 40\u00ba up in the southeast at the peak, however, is destined to be overshadowed.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12 August 2026 &#8211; all of UK<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-528705600-1024x667.jpg?fit=800%2C521\" alt=\"The Scilly Isles will see a 96% partial solar eclipse just before sunset on 12 August 2026. Credit: Roger Tidman \/ Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Europe\u2019s first total solar eclipse since 1999 will bring up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds of totality to Iceland and Spain on 12 August 2026, with a totally eclipsed sunset visible from Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca).<\/p><p>The path of totality for the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse cruelly misses the British Isles by a few hundred miles.<\/p><p>Those who can\u2019t travel will be treated to a huge partial solar eclipse just before sunset peaking at 96% in the Scilly Isles.<\/p><p>Everywhere in the UK will see at least an 89% partially eclipsed Sun on 12 August 2026, about 13\u00ba above the northwestern horizon.\u00a0<\/p><p>This is probably one of the best UK solar eclipses happening this decade.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 August 2027 &#8211; all of UK<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1409662844-1024x768.jpg?fit=800%2C600\" alt=\"The Shetland Isles will see just a 13% partial solar eclipse on 2 August 2027, whereas Londoners will get 42%. Credit: Ashley Cooper \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>An entire lunar year later another solar eclipse occurs.<\/p><p>This time it\u2019s the big one, with a total solar eclipse across the Straits of Gibraltar, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula bringing as much as 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality.<\/p><p>That will occur over Luxor, Egypt in the longest totality of the century, with Mecca in Saudi Arabia also in the path of totality.<\/p><p>From the UK it\u2019s again the Scilly Isles that see most of the partial eclipse at 48%, reducing to 13% for the Shetland Isles.<\/p><p>Londoners get 42%.<\/p><p>The eclipse will peak around 10:00 a.m. as the Sun and Moon are around 37\u00b0 above the eastern horizon.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>26 January 2028 &#8211; all of UK<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1202231827-1024x683.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"Northern Ireland will be one of the best places in the UK to see the 26 January 2028 solar eclipse, with 42% visible. Credit: Sara Winter \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The 26 January 2028 eclipse is arguably the most exciting of all UK solar eclipses this decade, but being furthest west will help. <\/p><p>On 26 January the prize is a partially eclipsed sunset above the southwestern horizon.<\/p><p>The best places to be include Northern Ireland (42%), West Wales (51%) and Cornwall (55%).<\/p><p>Further afield this is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/annular-solar-eclipse\">annular solar eclipse<\/a>, where the apparent size of the new Moon isn\u2019t quite large enough to cover the Sun.<\/p><p>The \u2018ring of fire\u2019 eclipse on 26 January 2028 will be seen from within a mostly seaborne path that begins in the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean and ends in southern Spain and the Balearic Islands.<\/p><p>A \u2018ring of fire\u2019 sunset will be seen from Ibiza and Mallorca.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12 June 2029 &#8211; eastern Scotland, northeast England<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1410765755-1024x550.jpg?fit=800%2C430\" alt=\"Northeast England and eastern Scotland will be among the best places in the UK to see the 12 June 2029 partial solar eclipse. The U.K. gets a slight glimpse of this one.<\/p><p>Like in 2024, it\u2019s a slight view, only those on the eastern coast of Scotland and northeast England in position for a 19% eclipse sunrise.<\/p><p>Even from the Shetland Islands, it will be only 2\u00ba above the northeastern horizon.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1 June, 2030 &#8211; all of UK<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/GettyImages-1442745350-1024x684.jpg?fit=800%2C534\" alt=\"On 1 June 2030, southeast England will be the best place in the UK to see the sunrise partial solar eclipse. Credit: Oscar Stewart \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Another annular solar eclipse, this visible from within a path from Algeria to Japan, brings a sunrise partial solar eclipse to the UK<\/p><p>From all locations the eclipse will begin as, or just after, the Sun rises in the east, with as much as 49% being obscured as it hangs 12\u00ba above the southeastern horizon.<\/p><p>On 1 June 2030, southeast England will see the most significant eclipse.<\/p><p>The UK may not be the best place in the world to hang out waiting for a total solar eclipse.<\/p><p>But British eclipse-chasers can look forward to a few enticing sights from home in the 2020s with some tempting opportunities for short-haul eclipse-chasing.\u00a0<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between 2024 and 2030 the U.K. will experience a partial solar eclipse every year.
