Today\u2019s events have exceeded my expectations and was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life.<\/p><p>The joy that a total solar eclipse brings is indescribable and is why I am an eclipse chaser.<\/p><p>Having spent the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/april-8-eclipse-build-up\">day before the eclipse in San Antonio<\/a>, I arrived in Kerrville, Texas just as the Sun was rising and the city was already a hive of activity.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kerrville was one of three sites NASA chose to cleberate the total solar eclipse on April 8, drawing in thousands of visitors. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>At the Eclipse Festival in Louise Hays Park, enthusiasts were seeking out prime positions to set up huge telescopes and cameras.<\/p><p>As were NASA, who were here to educate, although while the interest was on the Sun\u2019s current levels of activity, everyone\u2019s attention was on the weather.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-04-1024x768.jpg?fit=800%2C600\" alt=\"A huge pair of eclipse glasses ready for the total solar eclipse on April 8 in Kerrville, Texas. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Storms were forecast, but there were promising glimpses of blue sky. \u00a0<\/p><p>I could feel the excitement build as everyone waited for first contact, when the Moon first \u2018touched\u2019 the edge of the Sun.<\/p><p>From that moment on, I was mesmerised.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-03-1024x1008.jpg?fit=800%2C788\" alt=\"So many people talk about the eclipse being a once in a lifetime experience to spend with families. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Students from the University of Texas Astronomy Club shared their passion through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/top-astronomy-kit\/best-solar-telescopes\">solar telescopes<\/a>, inviting everyone to observe our host star, and gave me a look at prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/astrophotography\/sun\/sunspots\">sunspots<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>After wandering the park, I chose a prime position with hillside views by the river.<\/p><p>Before I knew it, new friends told me the distances they had travelled and how they &#8220;couldn\u2019t miss spending this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with loved ones.&#8221;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-05-768x1024.jpg?fit=768%2C1024\" alt=\"Eclipse-chasers drawn together by the unique experience. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>We tried creating patterns of the Sun\u2019s shadow using colanders, but the high-level clouds dimmed the sunlight and my experiments failed.<\/p><p>However, we were blessed with the occasional break in the clouds, so using our eclipse glasses we could track the passage of the Moon.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-totality-and-darkness-descends\"><strong>Totality and darkness descends<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-02-956x1024.jpg?fit=800%2C857\" alt=\"An eclipse photographer sets up beside the river to get a 'holy grail' image of the Sun's corona during the April 8 eclipse, Kerrville, Texas. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>90 seconds before totality, the anticipation was almost unbearable as the crowd shouted &#8220;come on&#8221;.<\/p><p>I watched over the hills as an eery shadow crept towards me.<\/p><p>The Sun kept on teasing me as it weaved in and out behind the clouds.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-07-1024x974.jpg?fit=800%2C761\" alt=\"Two minutes before totality, the sky takes on an eerie colour. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The last of the Sun\u2019s rays emphasised the Moon\u2019s rugged terrain, wowing me with Bailey\u2019s Beads and then frustrating me as clouds obscured the bright flash of the diamond ring.<\/p><p>Totality had began and the crowd went wild.\u00a0<\/p><p>For 4 minutes 25 seconds, I witnessed the most beautiful and incredible natural phenomena.<\/p><p>The clouds parted and I was beholden to the corona in the sky.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-08-1024x768.jpg?fit=800%2C600\" alt=\"Totality captured with a camera phone, Kerrville, Texas, April 8 2024. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite having my binoculars to look for prominences, I was so lost in the moment, I forgot to look through them. <\/p><p>I just stared at the thin pinkish-red chromosphere. It was if I had stepped into another world.<\/p><p>After 60 seconds, the Sun and Moon disappeared and I took in how dark the world had suddenly become and how the glimpses of blue sky had taken on a new hue. \u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/April-8-eclipse-Kerrville-09-1024x768.jpg?fit=800%2C600\" alt=\"The sky darkens during the April 8 total solar eclipse, Kerrville, Texas. Credit: Yvette Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Back to reality<\/strong><\/h2><p>As the light quickly returned, a loud duck announced the end of totality.<\/p><p>With the clouds, there were no opportunities to view shadow bands, but everyone started talking about their experiences and felt blessed to have seen the corona.<\/p><p>Many people quickly left the festival to avoid the predicted traffic jams, but I just lay there smiling, stuck to the spot, until last contact.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/04\/GettyImages-2141953203.jpg\" alt=\"A total solar eclipse over Kerrville, Texas on Monday, April 8, 2024.
