Credit: Jades Collaboration<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>It appears the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/a-guide-to-galaxies\">galaxy<\/a> had previously been voraciously producing stars.<\/p><p>Then, around 10 to 20 million years before the time at which it\u2019s now being observed, star formation suddenly stopped, or quenched.<\/p><p>Galaxies stop producing stars when they run out of gas, but there are many ways this gas can disappear.<\/p><p>They also don\u2019t usually occur until much later in the galaxy\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;We\u2019re looking for other galaxies like this one in the early Universe, which will help us place some constraints on how and why galaxies stop forming new stars,&#8221; says Francesco D\u2019Eugenio, from the University of Cambridge.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;It could be the case that galaxies in the early Universe \u2018die\u2019 and then burst back to life.
